A terrific day of looking, listening, and conversation at FotoFest at FUJIKINA. Curious Matter was delighted to join the roster of portfolio reviewers and to meet so many committed, thoughtful photographers.

Many thanks to @FotoFest and FUJIKINA @fujifilmx_us for the invitation and such a warm welcome. A really wonderful program!

Please join us at the Center for Book Arts on November 9 at 7:00 pm for the upcoming BookTalk: "Curious Matter: Exhibitions, Books, and the Practice of Inquiry," an in-person conversation with artists Raymond E. Mingst and Arthur Bruso, who are the founders and co-directors of Curious Matter, an exhibition and project space they established in Jersey City in 2007. Growing from their individual art practices and shared interests in cabinets of curiosities, museology, and art as a point of departure for inquiry, Curious Matter brings artists, writers, and audiences into conversation through exhibitions, publications, and public programs. Books and printed matter have been integral to its work from the beginning, from exhibition catalogues and artist monographs to broadsides and publications that extend the life and ideas of an exhibition.

To RSVP please visit the link in our bio.

Our latest reflection is a personal one.
Three years ago we shared news that was unlike anything we’d written before. Looking back, we found ourselves thinking less about illness than about what those years have revealed.

On the occasion of our shared birthday month, we’ve written Marking August 2026: A Personal Reflection.

If you’ve wondered how Arthur is doing, or if you’ve been part of the support that has carried us through these past years, we’d be grateful if you took a few moments to read it.

Thank you, as always, for being part of Curious Matter. R+A

As we began developing Erasure Gallery 2026—in the context of our year-long inquiry, On Books: The form, flow, and force of books—we turned to our own library. Again and again, works by and about David Wojnarowicz surfaced, ultimately shaping this year’s exhibition.

What happens when political language becomes cultural reality?

In our latest essay, we consider how repeated phrases can redirect public conversation about art and culture, and narrow civic imagination.

We explore how language can reveal—and conceal—the values that shape a city’s cultural future.

Erasure Gallery returns.

Born in 2025 as a temporary act of remembrance, reflection, and resistance, Erasure Gallery continues in 2026 through the lens of our year-long inquiry, On Books: The form, flow, and force of books.

This year’s exhibition turns toward the life and work of David Wojnarowicz—artist, writer, and activist. Rather than revisiting familiar narratives of censorship and controversy, we begin with the work itself and the enduring place it has occupied in our own library and lives.
