WIP Show 2025 - “Atlas of Itineraries” chronicles ADS8’s journey with and through the Mediterranean Basin and its multiple elsewhere(s), as we set ashore to explore how relations, separations, and tensions continue to shape the Mediterranean imaginary.

Constellated around three critical nodes—Specters of flow; Hydro-climatic rifts; The Black Mediterranean—the works on display and accompanying publications index systems and histories crucial to understanding the relationships, protocols, and determinants that shape selected locales, affording a way of gathering, collating and (re)organising a range of evidence drawn from multiple sources as our companions in the process of identifying potential leverage points and spaces for intervention within, or, against these systems.

The exhibition’s final destination charts alternate spatial vocabularies that serve as critical narrative devices firmly grounded in models of repair, abolition, and justice that set the stage for a practice of rehearsal-to think with Ruth Wilson Gilmore-, where potential futurities compete and collide.

Apologies For The Bad Language
Tobi Ajiwe @ajiwet
ADS8 23/34

Acts of violence are not solely measured by their force and consequences but are judged through the lens of the state. Non-state actors engaging in violence are chastised for lacking civility, while the state’s monopoly on legitimising force upholds systems of power and oppression.

Apologies for the Bad Language re-evaluates normative understandings of violence by examining the unequal perception of violence enacted by the state and citizen violence. It explores violence as a tool for decolonisation through the destruction, examination, and reappropriation of the state’s spatial bodies.

The phrase, Apologies for the Bad Language, demonstrates a reinforcement of standards for polite society and an active non-acceptance of behaviours that do not fit these conceived standards. The phrase also stands as a warning preceding the violent destruction of the status quo.

The narrative is structured in five acts, examining emancipatory violence through the Brixton uprising. It reconstructs key locations from the uprising, creating a stage for the subsequent acts. These acts depict a revolt, the destruction of the established order, a taxonomy of remnants, and the re-appropriation of fragments to build a new, liberated space. #rcaads8 #royalcollegeofart #rcaarchitecture by @rca_ads8

Colonial Empire: Uncovering the Enduring Colonial Legacy of the Tea Industry and Hyde Park

Ruby Flanagan @rubster_f
ADS8 23/24

The project exposes Britain’s glorified colonial history and ongoing exploitation through the lens of the tea industry, a key British botanical artefact intertwined with colonial domination. By curating a walk in Hyde Park, the project challenges sanitised narratives and reveal the suppressed voices of Britain’s violent past. Tea’s journey from a royal status symbol to a staple sourced from former colonies underscores enduring injustices. Hosting diverse guests for afternoon tea discussions, the project subverts traditional views and address racial oppression. Design interventions along the Hyde Park route, such as repurposing the Albert Memorial and exposing the Great Exhibition’s remnants, confront colonial legacies. Establishing THIRST headquarters at Hyde Park aims to create a fair tea industry and educate the public on ongoing exploitation. Inspired by Edward Said’s “Orientalism,” the project seeks to reclaim control of knowledge and representation, fostering critical thought on the pervasive impacts of colonialism. #rcaads8 #royalcollegeofart #rcaarchitecture by @rca_ads8

Sea Mither
Maisie Bishop @maisiebishop
ADS8 23/24

‘Sea Mither’ explores the afterlives of the abandoned North Sea oil infrastructures, and aims to reappropriate them in a programme of food, folklore and ‘Kelp Architectures’ to create a reconnection between the archipelago Orkney Islands and the Sea.

As North Sea Oil Supplies fall, the massive amounts of engineering and nets of infrastructure that colonised the North Sea has begun its decommissioning. Where removal of these structures has not been possible, I propose a repurposing to Kelp Aquacultures, cultivating the fast-growing, native brown algae with a high carbon absorption potential. From this, the Kelp is harvested and brought to my site, Sanday, the Orkney Islands, where it is used in the production of ‘Kelp Architectures’ and as a component of historic Orcadian farming rituals. The final proposition is a long form dining experience that explores the historic and cultural relationships between Orcadians and the land, sea and seasons. #rcaads8 #royalcollegeofart #rcaarchitecture by @rca_ads8
