It’s been a rough Summer for Rhododendrons and now this ‘Golden Coach’ plant has decided to flower in September when it usually blooms in May!

A cross between ‘Jalisco Elect’ and an ‘Elizabeth de Rothschild’ hybrid, it was bred in 1976 but not registered until as recently as 1990.

‘Golden Coach’ is gradually being joined by the blooms of ‘Christmas Cheer’ and R. nobleanum for example so make sure you seek out this unseasonable display soon…

A tad earlier than we would normally expect, there are several Camellia sasanqua shrubs flowering across the garden at the moment.

All gloriously scented, pictured here you’ll see ‘Jean May’ (found near the Chinese Steps), ‘Chojigurama’ (blooming at the Herb Garden) and ‘Sasanqua Rubra’ (nestled in the Loderi Garden).

There are still many more to bloom so keep your eyes open between now and next February and see how many you can spot…

RCMG × SBA Competition 2027

Following the success of our 2025 collaboration, we are delighted to once again join the RHS Rhododendron, Camellia and Magnolia Group (RCMG) for a special botanical art competition in 2027.

The competition invites SBA Fellow members from around the world to create botanically accurate and aesthetically beautiful works celebrating the genera Rhododendron, Camellia and Magnolia.

Artists may submit up to three works, in any traditional medium (excluding digital artwork), with a maximum framed size of 60 × 90 cm.

The winning work will be exhibited at Plantae 2027 at Mall Galleries, London, and must therefore be available for the exhibition and offered for sale.

Deadline: 7 April 2027

The dedicated competition entry link has been sent to members by SBA email.

Please note that this competition is entirely separate from Plantae 2027 submissions. Works featuring Rhododendron, Camellia or Magnolia submitted to Plantae will not automatically be entered into the RCMG competition; artists wishing to take part must submit their work separately through the dedicated RCMG competition link.

For those looking for inspiration and opportunities to study these remarkable plants from life, the RCMG website also includes information about gardens where these genera can be seen.

For further information or if you are unsure about any aspect of the competition, please contact exhibition@soc-botanical-artists.org.

We look forward to seeing your interpretations of these magnificent plants.

An Exhibition of Watercolour Paintings by Helen Hilliard.
The Grange Museum and Gallery, Rottingdean, Sussex.
2nd-27th September 2026.

The Grange in Rottingdean, Sussex, will be holding an exhibition of botanical watercolour paintings by Sussex artist Helen Hilliard (1921-2004), sponsored by the RHS Rhododendron, Camellia and Magnolia Group.

The exhibition will present watercolours of the three genera that were a favourite of Helen. Helen made great use of her considerable artistic talent, also producing lovely watercolour landscapes and specialising in life-size flower portraits. With her skill and great eye for the finer details, she painted extremely accurately and so beautifully an exact picture; not just of any flower, but an immediately recognisable image of the species or variety, which jumps off the page as being correct. It’s amazing how she could portray a white flower on a white background and make it stand out so clearly!
Paintings will be for sale with funds being raised for the MNDA Charity.

Magnolia Monday!

Thank you to John Marston for sending in this stunning photograph of Magnolia 'Summer Solstice', flowering all the way from April through to June! Thought to be a cross between Magnolia globosa and the pink form of Magnolia obovata, the blooms are white and highly scented, with a pale pink blush on the outside of its tepals. The hybrid was named by Maurice Foster in 1995, having stumbled upon it in the Savill Gardens Plant Centre at Windsor Great Park.

Please keep sharing your Magnolia photos with us @rcm_group #rcmg
