Admittedly, our turkey’s lifejacket could use a better fit! If you’re heading out on the water, make sure yours fits snugly and is properly fastened. 🦃

But seriously, we wish you a lovely long weekend, however you spend it. Know that our volunteers are on call all weekend if you need help. by @rcm_sar

We wear seatbelts for ourselves — but also for the people who want us to come home. A lifejacket or PFD is no different. If someone you love is beside you on the water, give them one less reason to worry.

Our volunteers wear theirs. Why aren’t you wearing yours? Experience on the water doesn’t make you immune to an unexpected fall, collision or sudden change in conditions.

Don’t wait until you need it.

460 missions. 321 people given assistance. 50 lives saved.

And it’s only the end of August.

Across BC, more than 950 RCMSAR volunteers have already put in over 6,200 hours of training this year — preparing to be there when someone on the water needs help.

"I’m not going to be out very long.”

You still wear your seatbelt on a short drive, right?

Being on the water for 20 minutes instead of two hours doesn’t make an unexpected fall, a sudden change in conditions, or a medical emergency any less likely.

If you’re heading out, put it on before you go.

"If I fall in, I’ll just swim. ”

Maybe. But do you really want to use all your energy just trying to stay afloat?

If you end up in the water unexpectedly, things can get difficult pretty quickly. The water is probably cold. You might be tired, injured or farther from shore - or help - than you thought.

A lifejacket or PFD helps keep you afloat so you can conserve your energy and focus on what comes next.

Heading to Steveston this weekend? Come say hello to volunteers from @rcmsar10 at the Richmond Maritime Festival!

We'll be there to talk about marine search and rescue, answer your questions and show you some of the equipment we use on our rescue vessels.

The festival is a great day out for anyone across Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, with live music, kids’ activities, restored wooden boats and ships, and plenty to explore along the waterfront.

📍 Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site, Steveston
📅 August 22 & 23
⏰ 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.
🎟️ Free

Experience makes you a better paddler. You learn to read the water, watch the weather and know your limits.

But experience can do something else, too. When you’ve been out hundreds of times and nothing has gone wrong, it’s easy to believe the next time will be no different.

Most days, it won’t be different.

A lifejacket or PFD is for the day when something does happen.

Experience on the water teaches you something important: conditions can change quickly, and even familiar waters can surprise you.

People who have spent years boating and sailing know that experience doesn’t make you immune to a fall, a collision, a sudden change in weather or a medical emergency. If anything, experience teaches you to respect what can happen — and to be prepared for it.

That’s why people who know the water wear their lifejackets.

Do you ever see adults and kids riding their bikes, and the kids are wearing helmets, but the parents aren’t? What would happen if the parent suffered a head injury?

I think about the same thing on the water.

We’re very careful about making sure our kids are wearing lifejackets. And of course we should be. But they’re counting on us, too.

If something goes wrong, your child needs you to stay afloat, stay with them and help them. And come home with them. Wearing your own lifejacket isn’t just about protecting yourself. It’s about being there for the person beside you.

So if you make sure your kids wear theirs, please put yours on too.

RCMSAR volunteers wear a PFD every time they are on the water—not because they expect something to go wrong, but because they know it can.

Being prepared starts before you leave the dock. A fall, collision, mechanical problem or sudden change in conditions can happen before there is time to prepare.

So, why aren’t you wearing it?
