Special thank you to Ladysmith SAR for taking the time to meet us last weekend!

Being apart of the SAR fleet is such an honour and we love being able to provide vessels for our locals units.

IN ACTION: Pagers went off at 01:20 July 14 to search for an overdue vessel reportedly with engine trouble. Despite being pulled from deep slumber at home, our crew were off the dock in approximately 20 minutes.

A well executed coordinated search between two Canadian Coast Guard vessels and RCM-SAR 4 led to the subjects being found at around 0400 this morning near Brunswick Point. The mariners wisely chose to beach the vessel and wait for help. A successful end to the early morning call and the Station 4 crew got to see hints of the morning sunrise on the way back to base. The crew headed home at 0500 to try to catch an hour of sleep before heading off to their respective day jobs.

This tasking highlighted the importance of having an effective means of communication on board at all times, and to leave a float plan with vessel details with a trusted person that knows how to call for help when overdue. The search crews, and Rescue Coordination Centre had no means of communicating with the subjects, nor any description of the vessel to work with. Had communication been established, the subjects likely would have been picked up and transported home in under an hour.

As always please remember these safety tips:

🛟 Wear a lifejacket, always! You and your family.

🚨 Call for Help immediately: use channel 16 on VHF marine radio or call *16, #727 or simply dial 9-1-1 on your cell.

🌤️ Leave a sail plan with loved ones, check the weather and tides before departing. Don’t forget about the wind forecast!

🌅 Be mindful of daylight. If you’re boating or paddling at night, have the appropriate and required lights. Be seen!

🗺️ Familiarize yourself with the area you visit - note commercial traffic zones, remote areas that lack cellular coverage.

🚫 Boat sober

🦺 Bring Required Safety Equipment: Test prior to departure, replace expired items.

🪨 Be aware of submerged objects: Rocks, stumps, log strikes can damage a boat’s hull or motor which can result in injury or death.

Saturday Training Day on the Water!

We took part in a dynamic joint training exercise alongside RCM-SAR 37 (Sooke), RCM-SAR 35 (Victoria), and the Canadian Coast Guard’s Cape Calvert and Victoria 1.

Over 45 of us came together on such a beautifully warm and sunny day, we practiced critical skills including deploying SAR teams to multiple locations for shoreline and inland searches, injury transport and extraction by vessel, coordinated multi-agency radio communications in challenging marine environments.

These joint exercises build the trust, speed, and interoperability needed to save lives when it counts. Huge thanks to all the crews and volunteers who made this possible!
