Still buzzing after taking a master class with the brilliant film & TV director Christine Swanson (@cswanson44 )—who I just learned is a fellow Detroiter! ✨ Even more divine, she brought in the legendary casting director Jaki Brown…the very woman who cast Eve’s Bayou, my favorite film of all time. 🖤 #jakibrown

I even had the opportunity to direct a scene during the class and was complimented and told I did well—an experience that was both humbling and deeply affirming. I’m sharing video with some of the gems that were dropped, because knowledge is power and should be shared 🎬

This moment has me even more excited about my future as a film director. Several projects are already in the works, and every step reminds me: what is for you will always be for you. Trust the timing. ✨

Meet our Moderator: Ryan Pearson

Ryan Pearson, a native, lifelong Detroiter and innate creative, brings a wealth of expertise and a diverse skill set to her role as Executive Artistic Director of Detroit Narrative Agency. Having earned a B.A. in Theatre Arts with a concentration in Screen Arts & Cultures from the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor, and an M.A. in Theatre Arts Administration from the University of California - Santa Cruz, she has honed her skills in the performance and media arts industries. Her journey in creative arts nonprofit began in 2009 at Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit and she later held multiple programmatic roles at Performing Arts Workshop in San Francisco.

In her current role as Executive Artistic Director at Detroit Narrative Agency, Ryan demonstrates her prowess in program development and community engagement. Her leadership has shaped DNA into a hub for showcasing the rich artistic tapestry of BIPOC Detroit filmmakers and edifying the city’s culture. Beyond her organizational duties, she actively participates in conferences, film festivals, and public engagements, solidifying her presence as a respected figure in the national arts landscape.

Ryan Pearson stands as a beacon in the arts community, embodying proficiency, empathy, and a commitment to fostering radical change. Creatively and professionally, Ryan identifies as a Griot/Storyteller, Strategist, and Shapeshifter.

Outside of work, Ryan's passion for holistic healing practices, diverse art forms, and community involvement reflects her well-rounded character. A dedicated mother to her young son, Ryan balances her career with a nurturing family life.

I have some exciting news to share!

As some of you know, professionally, I am the Executive Artistic Director of a dynamic organization, Detroit Narrative Agency.

Detroit Narrative Agency(DNA) supports and develops media-based storytelling centering Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) to foster collective healing, power, and liberation.

On Friday, May 30, 2025, we will be hosting a special edition of one of our signature programs, a film screening and talkback series called “Ethics & Aesthetics”.

We’ll be screening the IMAX version of Ryan Coogler’s groundbreaking film, “Sinners”, at the Emagine Theatres Royal Oak at 7pm.

Additionally, there will be a panel of local filmmakers discussing the film, along with audience participation, moderated by yours truly 🙂

This is a dream for me. I hope to see you there! Your support means everything, and you are in for such a treat ❤

I actually felt hope with this election. I actually believed they would choose a Black woman to run this country because she was the best person for the job. And to realize that no matter how brilliant and qualified we are, a mediocre, UNQUALIFIED, hateful, IGNORANT, white man will win against you is just devastating. Black women, it's time to burn these capes. At least when this place crumbles, they won't be able to blame it on a Black woman 🖤
