I don’t think I’ll ever forget the way your head fit in my palm. How you looked up like you’d already seen too much of the world and still chose to smile at me anyway. You were so small but somehow held everything I never knew I needed.
I cried. Not because I was scared, but because God let me witness something that soft in a world this sharp. You don’t know it yet, but you saved me. Not in some dramatic movie scene kind of way. But in the slow, quiet ways men like me rarely get saved. I started trading my self-destruction for sleep so I could wake up early and hear your laugh. Started praying different. Loving different. Breathing like I knew someone was watching. And you were. You always are. It’s been 365 lessons and 3 a.m. questions since you came. And every day you grow, I grow. Even when I’m tired. Even when I’m broke. Even when I’m doubting myself in the dark. show up. Not perfectly, but faithfully. Because you deserve that version of me. Not the one that overthinks everything. Not the boy who begged to be enough. You deserve a man who ain’t afraid to cry, to heal, to hold you without pride in the way. Truth is, being your dad is the scariest thing I’ve ever loved. This world ain’t built kind for girls like you, especially not ones kissed by God and wrapped in melanin. So I stay up worrying sometimes...what if the world don’t see what I see in you? What if you don’t see it either? I’ve been both the mirror and the mistake before, and I never want you to feel like you had to earn love just to keep it. Zanai, I hope you grow up soft where it matters, and steel where it counts. I hope you speak up, and never shrink for someone who couldn’t handle your full voice. I hope you dance when you’re happy, cry when you need and never measure your worth by who stayed or who didn’t. I hope you forgive me for the days I’m too tired, too human, too haunted by my own past to play pretend like I got it all figured out. I don’t. I could write a book about you but the earth would run out of trees long before I would finish it. Mama, you're nothing short of amazing. I'm truly blessed to have you in my life. Thank you for all the sacrifices and love you've given me and this family. There's nothing I could do to ever repay you but I hope my love for you will suffice. I've watched you go through so much and still manage to keep going with that bright smile of yours. That takes a kind of strength only God could give. I love you and I hope you have an amazing day.
