Our project in Dockenfield is nearing completion.

A development of two contemporary four-bedroom family homes, constructed by @heriotdevelopments , has been carefully integrated into its village setting. By responding to the site's natural topography, the homes sit comfortably within the landscape, with a mix of one and two-storey forms helping to minimise their visual impact.

As the finishing touches come together, we're looking forward to sharing the completed project soon.

This week we are introducing Ruth, who joined Re-Format in 2014 and qualified as an architect after completing her Part 3 at the University of Portsmouth in 2016. As a senior member of the team, she leads projects across all sectors and sizes, while also supporting the practice's social wellbeing initiatives and professional development.

She studied at the University of Liverpool and the University of Bath, graduating among the top students in her year, and gained valuable experience working in Germany on Passivhaus projects. A certified Passivhaus Consultant, Ruth promotes sustainable design principles across the practice.

At our recently completed garden house, a restrained palette of light-toned brick, timber cladding and an extensive green roof helps the home blend seamlessly into its woodland setting. Designed with sustainability in mind, the project incorporates durable materials, high-performance glazing, biodiverse planting and energy-efficient design to create a home built for the future.

Now complete, this Surrey home is organised around three courtyard gardens, each with its own purpose—arrival, living and bedrooms. Site update - family home extension in Radlett, Hertfordshire.

This project is focused on strengthening the connection between the home's living spaces and the surrounding landscape. A minimalist glazed façade, framed by a sleek aluminium canopy, will provide generous daylight while offering shade and helping to reduce solar gain.

With the steelwork currently being installed, the new living spaces are beginning to take shape, marking an exciting stage in the construction process.

Designing for learning, wellbeing and community.

The proposals for Horton Heath Primary School bring together education, landscape and recreation within a single, connected environment.

The masterplan includes a three-form entry primary school, outdoor learning spaces, sports facilities, allotments, ecological enhancements and high-quality public realm—all carefully arranged to create safe, welcoming and accessible spaces.

Landscape plays a central role throughout the scheme, helping connect people with nature while supporting biodiversity, active lifestyles and opportunities for informal social interaction.

By integrating architecture and landscape from the outset, the proposals create a place that is designed to support both everyday learning and the wider community for generations to come.

Good design is an evolving process.

For the Horton Heath Primary School, our concept evolved through careful site analysis, design testing and close collaboration with the wider consultant team and stakeholders. From the outset, the ambition was to create a school that forms an integral part of the neighbourhood, acting as a civic destination rather than a standalone building.

The early concept established two distinct teaching wings embracing a central community hub, creating a flexible layout that supports collaborative learning while allowing the school to grow from a two-form entry to a three-form entry facility as the community expands.

Throughout the design development, several key principles guided the evolution of the scheme:

• A civic edge with an open, welcoming frontage that engages the Local Centre.
• Community integration, with secure zoning allowing halls and facilities to be used outside school hours.
• Landscape-led design, incorporating outdoor learning, play spaces, woodland edges and green infrastructure.
• Active travel, strengthening pedestrian and cycle connections through the wider masterplan.
• Shared community use of sports facilities to maximise social value.
• Flexible, future-ready spaces that can adapt as the school and community grow.

The building's massing was carefully refined to respond to its setting, stepping from two storeys at the Local Centre down to single-storey elements alongside the sports pitches. This creates a more human scale, strengthens connections with the surrounding landscape and reinforces the school's role as the heart of a connected network of community spaces.

By continually refining the concept through design development, we've created a proposal that balances educational excellence, placemaking and long-term adaptability—delivering a school designed to evolve alongside the community it serves.

Our competition winning proposals for Horton Heath Primary School, Sports Facilities and Allotments have now been submitted for planning permission. Once again working closely with Peter Marsh Consulting as our project manager/lead consultant, this marks another important milestone following the consent of our proposals for The Folds at @onehortonheath.

Positioned at the heart of the wider development, the scheme has been designed as a key civic destination within the Local Centre, placing education, sport and community at the centre of the masterplan.

The vision extends beyond delivering a school, creating a place where education, recreation and nature come together to encourage active travel, support biodiversity and foster a strong sense of community.

By responding to the wider masterplan and its landscape setting, the proposals establish a vibrant neighbourhood hub that will grow alongside the community it serves.
