Back in early 2025, we were delighted to be appointed to design the interiors for @joinlonglane, a new wellness hotel and private members club set within a historic estate in West Sussex, on the edge of the South Downs.

As a studio deeply interested in how environments can support health and wellbeing, this project brings together so much of what we believe in. A place where architecture works quietly with the body, supporting calm, connection and a sense of being alive.

Long Lane sits within a 200 year old house surrounded by ancient landscape. During early research, we discovered that Joseph Paxton once designed a glasshouse on the site. His fascination with the Amazonian water lily later inspired the Crystal Palace and reshaped how light, structure and nature could work together.

Coincidentally, Chatsworth, where Paxton was head gardener, is just next door to where I grew up in the Peak District, which made the connection feel unexpectedly personal.

Paxton’s spirit of ingenuity, persistence and deep love of nature became a starting point for our approach. Designing spaces as an extension of the human nervous system, rooted in ecology, material intelligence and the rhythms of the natural world.

More to share in the coming weeks.

Pelagos is one of our favourite projects to date. The @thebiid clearly agreed when the property reached the finals of last years' BIID Interior Design Awards.

How do you build much-needed homes without losing the magic of a beautiful riparian landscape?

Our scheme near Pulens Lane, Sheet finds that balance, delivering 50% affordable housing while protecting and enhancing the special qualities of the River Rother.

The design creates a soft green edge to Sheet, opens public access and provides a generous ecological buffer so the adjacent river and woodland can continue to thrive.

This was a project of careful listening to the land, to local needs, and to the principles of the South Downs National Park. Big thanks to @Re__Format and @Fabrik_uk for their leadership and creativity throughout.

#mondaymood 'Uplifted.' The flash of sunshine which some of us have experienced this weekend has certainly put a spring in our step.

We're continuing this uplifted feeling this Monday, by putting the spotlight on one of our iconic community projects. (Also very timely with Lent beginning this week!)

Guildford Baptist Church

'Working with a vibrant and dynamic client body from Guildford Baptist Church, Re-Format’s design has totally transformed the ‘tired’ 1960s building into a stunning new facility to meet the diverse needs of a forward thinking community.'

Architects Re-Format have re-thought and revolutionised The Guildford Baptist Church. This dynamic new community and worship space has been superbly re invented and boasts the most dramatic transformation.
‘Re-imaging the entire form and appearance of the building within its context.’
Petrarch has been utilised to create an impressive, elegant and formidable facade, featured here in limestone, riven and all the more serene with the springtime setting.

‘Re-Format have a remarkable ability, among the many other talents that they possess, of recycling tired, worn out buildings. Ours is one of them and what Re-Format have come up with in terms of re-imagination of space, use and aesthetics is nothing short of miraculous.’
Rev Dr Ian Stackhouse, Senior Minister, Guildford Baptist Church

Colour: Petrarch Panels #012 Limestone
Finish: Riven
