On the #InternationalDayfortheEradicationofPoverty (October 17), we're spotlighting an urgent but often overlooked crisis in Ghana that affects approximately 2.4 million children under five: Child food poverty.

Child food poverty is a lack of dietary diversity in children. 🍽️ A child can be food poor even while being full because their diet lacks the varied nutrients needed for healthy growth and brain development.

The latest research from an Ashesi University Reach Alliance team examines the systemic drivers of child food poverty across socioeconomic contexts, with a particular focus on children aged two to five who fall outside major nutrition interventions, including the Ghana School Feeding Programme.

Drawing on interviews across Greater Accra and Upper West, the research highlights interconnected drivers of child food poverty and the need for stronger caregiver education, programme accountability, and attention to social and behavioural factors.

“Addressing child food poverty requires more than providing food—it requires ensuring that children have access to diverse, nutritious diets that support their development and future potential,” the research team writes.

On #WorldFoodDay (October 16), we’re highlighting the vital role traditional cooks play in protecting food sovereignty, biodiversity, and cultural knowledge in Colima, Mexico. 🇲🇽

Our latest research from a cross-university team (@uoft and @tecdemonterrey, with collaborator @itesouniversidad) examines @mujeresdelfuego, a collective of traditional women cooks founded in 2016 that brings together cooks, food producers, and teachers from across the state.

As industrialization, globalization, and changing labour patterns reshape how food is grown, prepared, and eaten, traditional food systems face growing pressures — threatening both biodiversity and ancestral culinary knowledge.

The research shows how Mujeres del Fuego are responding by transforming traditional cooking into recognized cultural work and livelihoods, while creating spaces for mutual learning, community connection, and autonomy.

What if we retired from the language of "problem-solving" altogether?

Adrian Little (@unimelb) suggests the impact of the Reach Alliance might be measured not by how we resolve challenges, but by how we transform them alongside the communities we work with.

Responding to Julius Mugwagwa's provocation on Reach's institutional logic, Little argues that Mugwagwa's call for "relational capabilities" has deep roots in Indigenous ways of knowing, grounded in connection to land, ancestors, and future generations.

"Perhaps relational research impact might be better understood in terms of how we transform the challenges we grapple with alongside our community partners rather than how we resolve them once and for all."

Little points to Reach at the University of Melbourne, where Indigenous philosophy and methodology sit at the core of the program, including a bespoke Indigenous-led training for all Reach researchers.

On #WorldMentalHealthDay (October 10), we’re highlighting the urgent need for equitable access to mental healthcare, especially in Northern Ontario, Canada.

Our latest research examines @teamornge’s Mental Health Team (MHT) initiative, introduced in 2022 to improve emergency mental health transportation for remote communities.

“In Northern Ontario, geography is not only a matter of distance; it determines whether care can be reached at all,” the team writes.

The research findings reveal that MHT has successfully increased transport capacity, but getting patients from point A to point B is only part of the solution. 🏥

Equitable mental healthcare requires stronger coordination, culturally safer care, community co-creation, better data, and system-wide change.

During the Triada Conference: 4th Latin American Congress on Social Sciences and Governance, current Reach researchers and alumni came together to connect, exchange ideas, and share experiences.

These conversations helped strengthen relationships across the Reach community and provided valuable insights that will help shape future Reach Alumni Council efforts, supporting collaboration, engagement, and alumni-led initiatives.

We’re proud to see our community bringing research closer to the real needs of people and communities across the region!

A vaccine can exist and still go unused. A program can be well-designed and still be ignored. Why do good solutions so often fail to reach the people they're meant for?

In this Reach Alliance faculty reflection, behavioural scientist Professor Dilip Soman (@uoft, @rotmanschool) argues that institutions like the Reach Alliance tackle the critical "second-last mile" — the relationships, trust, and contextual knowledge that must be built before any solution can complete its "last mile" to the people who need it.

"Reach may be doing something more important than teaching students how to solve problems. It may be teaching them how to approach problems."

Through field-based inquiry, Reach exposes students to ambiguity and competing perspectives, training them to observe, revise, and learn — not just act. It's a model built on co-creation, challenging the old view of universities as one-way pipelines from expert to user.
