So happy to announce that रेत (Ret), my Hindi translation of Bhaskar Chattopadhyay's The Disappearance of Sally Sequeira is finally out in both paperback and ebook formats. The third novel in the beloved Janardan Maity series, Ret is an excellent mystery novel. I have long been a fan of this series and I count myself very fortunate that I got to work on this translation.

If you have read the original, and know someone who'd like to read it in Hindi, do share the news! And if, by chance, you are yet to read the original, please go ahead and read it. I promise you won't be disappointed and will end up reading the entire series!

Sharing the link to all formats of the book in my bio as well as my story.

Very happy, quite excited and a trifle nervous about my first foray into the world of translation. Here's the product of love and labour, an anthology of stories that I have translated from Hindi to English. The stories have all been written originally by my father in his literary career spanning over fifty plus years, and in seeing this published, I have been able to fulfill a long standing dream of mine. Copies of the book are available now on Amazon, sharing the link in my stories. If you happen to get a copy, please let me know your honest opinion. Would love to know what you think about it.

Keeping my fingers crossed now! 🤞 by @reader_girl_reader

I enjoyed reading Amal Singh's latest novel Slow Burn, a novel that blends the real with the fantastical. Excellently plotted and oh so enjoyable, it plays with the ideas of the doubles and the mirror image. Definitely recommended!

Barbara Demick's Daughters of the Bamboo Grove: China's Stolen Children and a Story of Separated Twins was longlisted for the Women's Prize for Non-fiction and tells the story of China's one-child policy and adoption policy through the story of twin sisters. While one of the sisters remained with her family, the other was adopted by a family in the USA. What Demick narrates is the story of their birth, their growing up in two different nations and finally, the hesitant journey of discovering one another.

This was my first time reading this well-known journalist and author and it definitely won't be the last. It's impressive how Demick manages to use the story of individuals to highlight something that happened on a much bigger level, impacting many families.

The Midnight Shift is a novel that uses the figure of the vampire as a metaphor for loneliness. It sort of combines the police-procedural with the fantasy although it doesn't have the force of a crime-thriller. But then perhaps that's never the aim of the writer in the first place.

The lonely elderly are dying at a hospital/care home. Their deaths appear to be suicides and because there's no one to really follow through on those deaths, the police aren't looking at any other theories either. Except Suyeon. Suyeon cannot believe that all these deaths are suicides and her doubts turn into certainly when she meets Violette. Violette is a vampire hunter and together they try and put an end to these deaths.

In many ways, The Midnight Shift works very well, esp when it comes to documenting loneliness of the many kinds. Where it falters a bit is in its characters who had every potential to become memorable but don't. And the slightly rushed ending. Still, recommended for anyone interested in a Korean vampiric novel and/or novels with female characters holding on despite their loneliness and losses.

The only signed copy of a book I own is Ruskin Bond's The Room on the Roof/Vagrants of the Valley. It was 2010, and I was visiting the Book Fair in Delhi with my parents. I had already bought the book from the Penguin stall when I spotted Mr Bond sitting in Rupa Books. I was so nervous! I somehow went up to him, balbbered some nonsense (I doubt he understood a single word I said), and he was so lovely. He kindly signed my copy and it has stayed with me since.

Wish you a very very happy birthday, dear Sir. And a very speedy recovery. You have given so many of us such lovely stories, our childhood was richer because your words were a part of it.

Murder Your Employer by Rupert Holmes was a really entertaining book, one which combines humour with some good old (fictional) murdering in a way that felt very fresh.

The book is written in the form a guide that comes from the M master school where they create experts in the art of 'deleting'. The location of the school is unknown and this guide book written by its dean contains the details of the 'thesis' of three of its students. Each of them is out to delete their employer, and how!

Definitely recommending this for anyone likely to enjoy something different in the genre other than a straight thriller or whodunit.

I came to Mannu Bhandari through Rajnigandha, the film. A few years ago, I read Apka Bunty and loved it. This too is a Story, her autobiography translated into English, is another book that made for almost compulsive reading. I am glad I got the chance to review it for The Hindu. (Link in bio)

Horowitz's A Deadly Episode was one of my most-looked-forward-to books of this year and I am glad to say it didn't disappoint. Although those chances are always rare when reading something by the author!

I love this series particularly because of the playful and intelligent meta-twist that Horowitz has made a part of these books right from the beginning - a fictional version of Anthony Horowitz is the first person narrator! This one was crisp and well-plotted and I will gladly confess I could not figure out who the culprit was till the end. If you find your interest piqued by this post, I'd recommend you start from the first book of the series.

Laurent Tillon's Being an Oak is the perfect recommendation for this Earth day. Translated from the French, it tells the story of Quercus, the oak tree. Other characters in his story show how everything in nature including forests, trees, animals - and humans - are so interlinked, so codependent. Reading Being an Oak will remind you once again of how cooperation is nature's byword, how nothing in nature ever goes to waste.

A lovely, well-written book for anyone and everyone interested in nature writing.

Assassins are Our Greatest Assets is the second novel in the Assassins series by Shesh and adds a new chapter to the story of CEO turned assassin Ishamel Dollar. This time he is more cautious having gained experience from his first two hits in the previous book. However, this time there's also Inspector Shafiq of the CID who is on his trail. How does this end? Well, definitely not the way I had expected it to!

The second book follows quite similar pattern to its predecessor and those who enjoyed the first read will find themselves sucked into the world of Ishamel and his shenanigans once again. Although I enjoyed this book, I did feel that there were places where the book slightly slowed down, perhaps because of its similar theme and structure to the first one. The author tells his readers that there are a few more books planned in the series. Going by their descriptions and the ending of Assassins are Our Greatest Asset, I hope to read something different from these two books.

Thanks to @radreads_25 for sharing the book with me.

Recently I find myself reading only classic detective fiction/crime writing. It doesn't help that the British Library Crime Classics feature such attractive covers! I am not a fan of the locked-room mystery though. Give me a closed-circle mystery anytime.

While John Dickson Carr is more popular as someone who wrote many locked-room, impossible crime novels, he also wrote the other kind. The Black Spectacles is one such mystery. I found it quite entertaining and well-done. Definitely recommend!
