Just yesterday, we shared a photo of Lali sitting in her little pool.

For the last few days, this had become her favourite spot. She would quietly sit there, watching the world go by.

Lali came to The Barnyard as a tiny pup with her mother and three siblings.
She grew up here, grew old here, and spent almost two decades surrounded by familiar faces, friends, and love.

Today, we had to say goodbye.

It’s never easy losing a resident, no matter how many years we’ve had together. But there is comfort in knowing that Lali lived a long life, knew kindness, and was cared for until her very last day.

Run free, sweet girl. Thank you for every year, every wag, and every memory.

It was @reader_girl_reader story that recommended this book and I enjoyed the latest in the series as much as the first. Perhaps a little more than the others as Hawthorne is more humanised in it, seems more fallible and humble. Additionally the murderer comes as a total surprise along with the motive for it.

I complete 28 years of life today and now I firmly believe, or wait, it'll be a little contradictory and it might not even make sense, but I can't pour entirely here so I'll keep it at this: Love is not what weakens a man nor does kindness but being spent upon is what humbles him. Love is not real, obviously, and kindness is free it is everywhere, only spending is real. Not-metaphoric. Valuable. A contradiction, considering this post itself is for all the kind people and you might be thinking this is a shallow way of looking at people and relations but honestly I haven't been taught any better. And by myself among other things I'm learning to be of value and thereby being a man.

Thank you so much, the kind people who gifted me these books. You made my birthday month with the day itself better. ❤️

Initial thoughts:
Despite a tad too many technical details, the initial part was enjoyable and grounded the narrative quite well in reality. It felt like watching a movie and we liked how there were two timelines which might converge in the future.

The buildup, the space training, the backstory of how Joan desires to be an astronaut and her journey to becoming one to joining the space station was gripping.

A few common tropes like the male bastion and the chauvinism that women can’t do it, but all in all TJR’s writing style does captivate, keeps up the pace and doesn’t let you give up on the book.

The middle:
started sagging a little for all of us, felt repetitive and we were disappointed that the love story became ‘the’ story instead of being one of the many relationships with the focus remaining on the space launch.

The reservations:
It was felt that the message was too in your face, the feminist idea expressed in a way that felt a bit simplified and distilled.

For instance, the point where Lydia is asked by the others to not laugh on the male astronauts’ sexist jokes was fine but the way an entire conversation takes place felt as if the author wasn’t really respecting the reader’s intelligence and was lecturing about something which actually isn’t new and which most of the readers know.

Some portions felt didactic in nature. We discussed target audience and what age group constitutes the majority of her readership ; millenials are pretty woke, right?

The end:
The last section uplifed the read and it also evoked emotions about the kind of injustice an entire community has gone through over the years just because their kind of love isn’t understood by the majority.

The acknowledgement section reiterated the in-depth research the author undertook. book was well-researched.

Thoughts also went to the Columbia mission that Kalpana Chawla was a part of. We know what was the final nail in the coffin (the shuttle burning up upon re-entry) but who knows what had actually transpired up there before the final stage happened !

The life of a caregiver is often shadowed by the person under care. Shefali Tripathi Mehta’s book, “People on our Roof,” is a novel that takes an incisive look at the pains and struggles of a caregiver. Naina’s mother is diagnosed with schizophrenia and her sister lives with autism. Naina is the sole breadwinner in the family, her father having left them when they were children. She juggles her job with caring for her family, especially her mother who lives in fear of the ‘green people on the roof’. Set in 1990s-2000s Delhi, Naina faces up to the intense stigma that surrounds mental health in a conservative society while trying to make something of her own life.

Naina is an emotionally turbulent character. Understandably so as all her patience and kindness are used up at home as she takes care of her mother. And that’s not easy as she has to deal with violent temper and mood changes. Physical and mental exhaustion is her constant companion, and it’s only when she meets Michael that she feels something give inside her. But fate has other plans in store.

This is a primarily character-driven book and Naina’s growth as a daughter, sister, and individual forms the arc of the story. From being close to falling apart at the seams with the burden she carries we see Naina growing into a mature, confident woman. Through everything she undergoes, we also see her unwavering love for her mother and sister, which propels her to find the truth behind her father’s disappearance.

Mehta writes in clear, conversational prose, and keeps the narrative momentum consistent. What results is a tender yet powerful, vulnerable yet feisty story.

Mental health is now talked about more openly but the stigma lingers. The roots are still deep, and biases numerous. We need more books like these. Many more.

Mehta’s book is an underrated gem that deserves more eyes. Please read and make these voices heard.
