[ the heartbreak hotel ]

Thank you @prhaudio for the #gifted audiobook!

Louisa is devastated after her breakup with her live in musician boyfriend. With not much going for her, she pitches the idea to her landlord, Henry, to turn her rental house into a hotel for those going through heartbreak. Along the way, Louisa and Henry explore their own heartbreaks and find love again.

This was a very sweet story, where the romance was steamy and fun but also the elements of grief and loss were examined in depth and with care. Henry and Louisa both experienced losses throughout their lives and their grief was still being lived and processed. I enjoyed the inn setting, the cast of characters who stayed at the hotel, as well as the familial relationships. I recommend this book to those looking for a contemporary romance story with emotional side plots ✨ by @reader_mama

[ the undercover bookshop ]
OUT NOW

Thank you @uplitreads @librofm for my gifted ARC & ALC copies!

Set in a small English town in the 1950s, Gemma is working at a local bookshop when she meets Ursula, a very good baker but also somewhat of the town’s most secretive individual. Gemma develops a friendship with Ursula, all the while playing detective and trying to figure out if Ursula is really who she says she is, or if she is a Soviet spy.

This was a unique take on a crossover between historical fiction and cozy mystery. I enjoyed the bookshop setting, and I was intrigued to figure out if Ursula was in fact a Soviet spy or just simply a wife and mother. While cozy mysteries are generally not my favorite, this was a delightful read that tied together nicely✨ by @reader_mama

[ keeper of lost children ]

In the 1950s, the American army was newly desegregated, allowing white and black soldier to serve alongside each other overseas. During this time, many mixed race babies were born to white German mothers, who were forced to put their babies in orphanages due to shame. Due to this crisis, Ethel Gathers started the “brown baby plan”, and was able to get many children adopted and brought to the United States.

Sadeqa Johnson has such a compelling voice in her writing, I am always immediately sucked in. It’s been a while since I flew through a book, and this story is exactly what I needed. The story is told across 3 POV as well as across 2 decades, and I was so attached to all 3 main characters. I love learning about pieces of history through novels as well. Lovers of historical fiction need to read this✨ by @reader_mama

✨BOOK REVIEW
[ under story ]

What’s a book that you thought about long after you finished?

Laurel can’t believe her luck when she is selected to work as dishwasher on a research base in Antarctica. She is looking to run away from her previous life after divorce and heartbreak, and leaving her career behind as a biologist she feels the best way to start over is to be someone new. Months after arriving and settling in, her ex husband and scientist, Eli, travels to work at the same base.

This story was so captivating. It is full of heartbreak and love, as well as mind bending questions like ‘is there a parallel universe out there and if we get to it, can we undo mistakes from the past’? I loved how the book was basically split into two halves, one in the regular timeline and one in the alternate universe. I had so many thoughts and questions about my own feelings about another dimension, which is what will make this book so special and unforgettable.✨ by @reader_mama

✨LAST NOW NEXT

Last | Under Story was so unique and captivating. It takes place in Antarctica, but there is a major element of time travel and time reversal. If you could go back and change one major part of your life, would you? I am still thinking about this one!

Now | keeper of lost children follows 3 POV across 3 timelines that will eventually converge. Set in 1950s/60s during the civil rights movement, the newly desegregated US army sent black troops to Germany where the “brown baby plan” was started to help orphaned mixed race babies find home. I’m so invested!

Next | the true confessions of First Lady freeman sounds like it will be full of scandal and drama which I’m here for in book form!👏

✨COFFEE & CURRENTLY READING

It’s been so hard for me to focus on books lately, and I have to remind myself that it’s just a season that will soon pass. I’m hoping this story brings me back out of my slump and gives me the warm fuzzies much like her previous book, Frederick Fife, gave me 🥰

[ the chestnut tree ]
PUB DAY 9/22

Thank you @getredprbooks for my gifted copy!

12 year old Adam is coming of age during a tumultuous time in American history. The Vietnam war is raging on, civil rights and racism are ever present, and religion further divides the people. Adam has a crush on his friend, Sally, but he begins to lose his innocence and faith in people when he realizes their religions will keep them apart. This story is short and a quick read. I enjoyed following history through the eyes of a young boy, and my heart hurt for Adam as he realized all what he thought was good in the world may be in jeopardy.✨ by @reader_mama
