Somewhere between quiet observation and absolute judgement, he’d have:

Sakura is the story of a Japanese family grieving the loss of their eldest son. Told through the eyes of the younger son, Kaoru, the story explores their complicated relationships, grief, love and all the things they struggle to say to each other. And then there’s Sakura, the family dog, who connects so many of their memories.

Honestly, I expected Sakura to play a much bigger role. Instead, the story takes us deep into the family’s messy relationships, including some rather unconventional and uncomfortable sibling dynamics.

I found these themes intriguing, but I’m still not quite sure how I feel about some of them. And while I appreciate a book that makes me think, I struggled to connect with this one.

I kept wanting more Sakura, more emotional payoff, and just a little more of whatever I thought this story would be.

An interesting read, but not quite what I’d hoped for. 🌸🐕

I met Vaish back in 2023 on a Saturday morning in @hsrreads . The first day it had started. I remember being really nervous cuz I had gone alone and wanted to meet readers hoping I would make a friend. I remember going upto her at the end of the reading session cuz she was reading Happy Place by Emily Henry and I wanted to read it😂 she let me borrow it later. So I took the book and also got a friend along with it. Safe to say I found my happy place. For life 🥹

It’s been 4 years since we met that day and I don’t think I can explain exactly what she means to me. But yes, she’s someone I know I can call up at 1 am(I have and there were tears involved lol), my go to elder sister, my photobooth partner, the one I text whenever I have something on my mind or vc to ask if my outfit was fine cuz I was going on a date lol, my coffee/reading date partner, my book best friend and my fav neighbour(literally 200mts away).

She’s someone who would go to lengths for you if you’re her friend, be there for you even before you realise you needed it. There’s this side of her only a few know and I’m so grateful I’ve gotten to see it every day the last 4 years

There’s so much more I could write here but I just want to say I love you so much and I’m so happy I get to call you one of my fav people. I know we are in different cities now but we’ll make this work. The only long distance I would ever do. Happy birthday Vaish💖 by @readikkulus
