๐Ÿ‘ฅ Apocalypse: Book Review ๐Ÿ“œ

Thank you @harperbooks for sending me a copy of Lizzie Wade's Apocalypse: How Catastrophe Transformed Our World and Can Forge New Futures.

This was a look at how human history has been shaped through the collapse and adaptation of past civilizations.

This built toward an intriguing look at society today and some impacts we see currently, due to past disasters and human choices.

We spend a chapter learning about an area, a people, a culture, and this structure was nice for someone who likes to read NF in parts alongside my fiction.

I found the latter half more interesting seeing how past decisions tied to our current landscape, but if you enjoy an archeological lens with stories bringing groups alive, I imagine you'd enjoy this read.

Overall, an interesting read! I would've loved another chapter or two tying more of this into present day, but just my preference.

๐Ÿšช The Faraway Inn ๐Ÿˆ

I have loved The Spellshop series by Durst so when I saw this standalone I knew I had to read it!

I did forget it was YA when I started, so I had to adjust expectations of the FMC, but once there, I enjoyed being dropped into a magical, fantastical world!

This really was the escape the dedication referred to, while also being cozy and easily enjoyable.

If you're looking for a book that will pull you in quickly and keep you engaged, I'd recommend - with a disclaimed that if YA relationships and MCs aren't for you, you'll have to adjust expectations or skip!

And Durst's books are always works of art!

๐Ÿšช The Scholar and the Last Faerie Door ๐Ÿงšโ€โ™€๏ธ

This read like a fictional memoir. We follow a farmers daughter who learns about the world of magic inhabiting her own due to a curse that strikes a loved one.

This changes her life's trajectory, which becomes adventurous and unexpectedly dangerous, despite many hours occurring within a library.

I enjoyed the story overall, but did find it slow at times, even with the time jumps and ensuing plot.

This was a magical, academic, slow-paced story that draws you in and unravels with spells and lore, all while commenting on the imbalance of society.

A book I'll be recommending to the right audience!

I picked this up because I really enjoyed The Magician's Daughter, and definitely recommend checking that one out by Parry! Faster-paced adventure with magic as well!

โ“๏ธ What's the last new-to-you author you read?

Mine would be Maddie Martinez!

๐Ÿ“– The Maiden and Her Monster

The cover, the title, the overall vibe of this book intrigued me...

And then the story almost immediately lost me.

If it wasn't for bookclub, I would not have finished this one.

There's folklore, magic, societal commentary on religion and oppression (I should've copied some of these quotes down), curses - and so many things that should've made for a great story.

But to me, the plot only continued due to very avoidable decisions the characters made, description only showed up during violent scenes which was a strange tonal shift, the characters were paper thin, and the relationships translucent.

There was a lot of potential but it felt like reading cliche scenes put together.

I think this could work for people, I was just not one of those people.

โ“๏ธ What have you been pairing reading with lately? Snacks? Drinks?

I've been drinking lots of earl grey tea and chips & homemade salsa lately! Yes, together, lol

๐Ÿ“š Library Haul โœจ๏ธ

Looking forward to reading these!

I'm currently reading a nonfiction and a bookclub book that I'm STRUGGLING through. Usually I would DNF, but I was gifted the book so I'm really trying to get through and I try to finish bookclub books. Part of bookclub is getting out of my comfort zone, right?

Today is my last day at work, a few days off, taking a trip, and then I'm starting a new job and I'm (nervous, but we'll reframe to) excited for the change!

In the meantime, I'm hoping to get some things done around the house and garden, play a bunch of volleyball, some soccer, host bookclub, and otherwise READ!

I have so many books from the library - and recently bought Adversary to the Villain - and I'm hoping to dive into some books the next few days before we get on a plane!

โ“๏ธWhat are you looking forward to in October?

The other day I treat myself to Adversary to the Villain, the newest in Hannah Nicole Maehrers Assistant to the Villain series! So excited to continue this series and be back in this world!

And today my hold for Sarah Beth Durst's book The Faraway Inn came in! A beautiful book and im excited to try something else by Durst, since I've only read her Spellshop series!

โ“๏ธ What book are you hoping to read before September ends?

๐Ÿ“š already 3/4 through 2026 ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

I went for a hike Saturday with a friend and we were chatting books for most of the hike, swapping recs and chatting all things authors, characters, etc. which had me reflecting on my year of books so far, so here's a quick recap and glimpse ahead!

I'm still hoping to get a 5 โญ๏ธ read before the year ends, and I've come close thrice, but haven't quite found that new all-time favourite (yes, this is likely just me being picky, but here we are), so ๐Ÿคž wish me luck (and share some great book recs please)!

โ“๏ธ Have you had a 5 star this year?? What do you recommend??

โ“๏ธ Or, do you think any of my hopefuls should be prioritized because they have 5 โญ๏ธ potential??

๐Ÿ“ Magpie Murders Review ๐Ÿ“š

My in person bookclub read Magpie Murders, and unfortunately I won't be able to go to the meet-up since I have volleyball, but I think there's much to discuss!

Although, discussing it without spoilers is harder and means I don't have much to say for a review ๐Ÿ˜…

A couple quick thoughts:

๐Ÿ–‹ unique format
๐Ÿ–‹ one storyline was much more intriguing
๐Ÿ–‹ some parts felt repetitive due to how things were woven together
๐Ÿ–‹ for how layered and complex the book intended to be (that's the vibe it gave me anyway), I was disappointed I guessed so much of the outcome
๐Ÿ–‹ for a murder mystery, it felt new and refreshing in many ways
๐Ÿ–‹ a little on the nose with some of the comments regarding mystery books, which took me out of the book a bit
๐Ÿ–‹ this is the first in a series and I'm not sure I'd enjoy it more or less repeating the experience
๐Ÿ–‹ the characters almost all had that one-dimensional feel that mysteries tend to provide with characters (the detective, the butler, the lord, the dude, you get it)

It was enjoyable, but it would've taken me longer had I not had a deadline because I didn't feel the need to pick it back up, and lost a lot of motivation the second half.

If you enjoyed the Ernest Cunningham books, I think you'd like this - not the same format but I think if you enjoyed one vibe you'd enjoy the other. Don't know why, just my instinct.

Has anyone continued the series? Thoughts??

โ“๏ธ What are you reading this weekend?

I'm binging my other bookclub book, The Maiden and Her Monster, since we're meeting tomorrow ๐Ÿ˜… wish me focus haha

๐Ÿ“š Book Quotes ๐Ÿ–‹

Here are some quotes from some books I've read and enjoyed this year!

Swipe for very brief comments on each!

โ“๏ธ What's the last book that made you highlight, annotate, copy down, or pause over the words you read?

These are some of mine!

#bookquotes

A cozy, found family adventure - with magic!

Unofficial sequel to the last! Read both!

Amazing rec from my sister. I liked how he broke down his arguments and how blunt he is about the universe. Enjoyed the audio book!

This was dark, gritty, and atmospheric with the same Garber writing!

Fantastic duology about rebellion and oppressed fighting back - with vampires!

St. James does ghost stories the best!

Kingfisher created a great duo with these characters that unexpectedly meet. Adventurous and funny!

Sequel to the last! The dynamics between this group were fantastic! Read these books (after the Saint of Steel series)!

Incredibly intense, extremely profound in many ways, and such raw characters. A magic war with so much societal commentary!

If you're done Baldree's books but want that same feel, read these! by @reading.with.t

๐Ÿ“š Book Review ๐Ÿ˜

I could sum this up as any of the below:

๐Ÿ’ผ a series of very fortunate events
๐Ÿ’ผ a man goes with the flow
๐Ÿ’ผ dumb luck and happenstance on repeat

Honestly, take your pick.

This story revolves around one man, and sort of a group, and their back stories leading up to the moment the book starts, and continues from there.

The idea was good, but I struggled with an MC who doesn't care for politics or anything of depth.

The story itself was enjoyable but the writing wasn't a fit for me. The events we see over the last hundred years or so was interestingly pieced together, but it's fairly ridiculous written about fairly bluntly and that felt mismatched to me.

Overall, okay, but I don't see myself looking into the authors other books.

(And yes, I returned the book to the library before I took a photo, so this is where we're at)

๐Ÿ“š Duology Rec: The Stonewater Kingdom โš”๏ธ

Gillig has created another fantastic duology with The Stonewater Kingdom!

The characters drew me in, the plot had me hooked, the magic was well done, and the atmosphere was great!

I cannot recommend Gillig's duologies enough! This and The Shephered King duology were both amazing reads!

I definitely had a clear favourite character - the sassy, "years beyond his wisdom", humorous, and so delicately caring gargoyle. What a great character!

And then @under.an.inkspell surprised me with this figurine for (when I finally put up) my bookshelves! Thank you for the chats throughout both books and for this little guy for my shelves!

โ“๏ธ Do you have any book-related items??
