September reads!!! 🪰

Nine books and no DNFs! No five star reads though. All of my September reads were really good, no new favourites but I’d definitely recommend them all.

The Disappearers is my third read from the Booker Prize shortlist, I’m hoping to read one more before the long-list is announced! Eight gay Jamaican men are rehearsing for a play when they’re brutally attacked by the mob, leaving all of them injured and one of them dead.
The content was so deeply disturbing, there’s scatterings of Jamaican dialect throughout, and there is only FIVE chapters. This was incredible and so moving but not an easy read at all.

Annie Bot was so nearly a five star read but the ending wasn’t what I wanted, I don’t want to spoil it for anyone but I wanted more gore. I was so uncomfortable reading this, it was a true, unflinching depiction of consent and misogyny.

Notes on Your Sudden Disappearance, Evenings and Weekends and The Hypocrite were all throughly enjoyable. Literary fictions at its finest.
I also read another hockey romance, not pictured as it’s already leant out to a friend!

There is No Anti-Memetics division was more a horror than a sci-fi, I really, really enjoyed it. The whole thing felt like one massive conspiracy theory that became fictionalised. I love a horror that’s realistic rather than mystical, this was exactly that! One of the beings presents itself as a middle aged white man, super scary!

The Odyssey was my local bookclubs pick, it was something I’m glad I’ve read but I wouldn’t visit it again.

I Want You to Be Happy is still on my mind and I’m so divided about how I feel about it! I really liked parts of it and hated others. If you enjoyed Cleopatra and Frankenstein, read this!!!

@thebookerprizes shortlist is announced tomorrow!!! eeeeeeek!!! ⭐️

I’ve read a handful from the long-list and I will most likely read a majority of the short-list! I’ve seen so many people post predictions, or their favourites so this is my guesses!

Having only read three titles, my options are super limited but….
Here are my top two!

The Things We Never Say is a beautifully written book that feels like a dull heartache.
A real, raw exploration of the human experience and what people mean to each-other. I adored this book, I’m currently making my way through Elizabeth Strouts backlist. This is my winner.

The Disappearers is my current read and it’s heartbreaking. I’ve never read anything written by Marlon James, having been a booker prize winner before I had really high hopes for this one. This book is totally meeting my expectations, the whole reading experience is hard and bleak but so worth it. The writing is at times very hard to grasp, there’s parts where the text is written in a Jamaican dialect which just adds to the experience. I can’t wait to finish this one. It’s definitely not a quick read. I can say with almost certainty that this WILL be on the shortlist, rightfully so!

I have a couple more from the long-list on my shelves which I’ll definitely be reading soon. Switzy is my most anticipated read, I’ve seen some incredible reviews from some super trustworthy sources! @library.of.ryan being one of them! 💌

The Shadow of the Object, which is not pictured as I completely forgot I had a copy, oops! This one seems like it’s going to be a fever dream/mind boggle of a book.

May We Feed The King was not for me. There’s a review on my page if you want to know more! 👑

Goodluck to everyone tomorrow, I cannot wait to see the shortlist announcement!!!! by @readsbymol

My Year of Rest and Relaxation - Ottessa Moshfegh 💤

I put off reading this for ages, all of the reviews I read were so mixed! Some people LOVE this book, claim it’s the weirdest thing ever and they’re always thinking about it. Others HATE it. I think I’m somewhere in the middle.

Our protagonist is unnamed throughout, she lives in NYC in 2000/2001. She is one of the worst main characters I’ve ever met. She is insufferable, self absorbed and completely incapable of empathy. She doesn’t care about anyone including herself. After being fired from her job in a local art gallery, she decides to begin a year long journey of ‘rest and relaxation’. One of the craziest things that happens is what our main character does when she leaves her job.

I love weird girl fiction, but this felt very mediocre in terms of weird. Nothing was unhinged enough, I kept waiting for SOMETHING to happen. In preparation for her ‘sleep’ she sells all of her furniture, tells everyone in her life that she’s going away and starts a deal with an alternative artist. The deal was that the artist could take pictures, record audio and manipulate our main character in any way shape or form. As long as he kept her fed every few days and let her remain in her drug induced semi conscious state, she didn’t care.

Reva, her ONLY friend is treated so coldly and poorly by the protagonist, all whilst being unlikable herself. I liked no-one in this book. There was so much potential here, I would’ve loved to see some of the weirdness that went on during the year. I would’ve loved to see the artists perspective and some more of his strange art.

I think maybe this is one of the original weird girl books. Obviously this is strange, but I feel like compared to other weird girl fiction it’s beginner level. I liked the premise more than the execution.

Definitely weird but not my favourite.

Books to read if you’re not ready to let go of summer just yet! ⭐️

Don’t get me wrong, I adore autumn. I’m ready to get into my darker reads and do my annual reread of Wuthering Heights. But I do miss summer a little already! I read so many incredible books over the last few months, so this post is dedicated to them.

I love a character who yearns, I find them so compelling, it’s almost a must for a summer read. I love passion, tension and secrecy, all of these fit the criteria.

If you exclusively read books set over summer, within the summer months, I respect you. But you should still read these books, so save this post for next year! by @readsbymol

August Reads!!!! 🦪

ugh august you were so dreamy. i miss you already. I spent so much time with my favourite people ever and read so many beautiful books. Eight books, no DNFs!

Two new five star favourites! Bad Habit was full of heartache yet so beautiful. The Things We Never Say was incredible, it felt like a raw, dull ache. Both books were so real and authentic, I’ll be thinking about these two for a while.

So thrilled for you was fun yet frustrating, four female protagonists, four perspectives. I loved two, hated the other two. They were obviously all imperfect, and they were all obviously written to garter sympathy for their separate problems. Yet I couldn’t get behind Lauren or Nicki, I would hate to meet them in real life, let alone be their friend. Stephi and Charlotte however, I loved.

Patricia Wants to Cuddle was another fun one! I loved the weirdness, but I wanted more. More queer, more horror.

May We Feed the King was disappointingly complex, a full review is on my page if you care to know what I thought. Sorry everyone who loves this one.

The Safekeep and Yesteryear were great!!!
I’ve seen nothing but complimentary reviews of both of these and they definitely lived up to expectations! Both had twists that were phenomenal! If you need something that has you hooked from start to finish, these two are PERFECT!

I also read yet another romance book, not pictured as I’ve already loaned her out to friends! We’re all reading our way through the series!

Bad Habit - Alana S. Portero 💋

I devoured this one! A beautiful, fragile story that was one of my favourites from August! Less than 250 pages, yet one of the most compelling books I’ve ever read.

This story is an examination of the trans experience. A working class Madrid in the 80s, a poverty stricken neighbourhood, a devastating heroin epidemic and a girl that yearns to find her community.
Her coming of age story follows her desperate search for role models, whilst juggling her identities.

Her experiences are highlighted through strong women in her animated yet impoverished neighbourhood. Her struggles with identity and loneliness are devastating, I had so much empathy and respect for her. There were some truly beautiful friendships within her story, specifically within the sex worker community. Their acceptance and unconditional love was so heartwarming. Their friendships were formed through pain yet held so much love and joy, a true found family.

I especially loved Margarita, her next door neighbours daughter. Their relationship felt so special. So much of their dialogue and history was undisclosed, yet it was what wasn’t said that made me love them the most. Their bond was built upon them both finally finding acceptance.

Our protagonist remains unnamed throughout, nothing suited her for me. I love how intentional this move was. Any name she would’ve taken would’ve tied her too closely to that community, to which she belonged to many. Therefore, to me, she fit in everywhere, yet no where. A true depiction of her loneliness.

I knew I had to read some translated fiction for Women in translation month. Little did I know I’d find such an incredible book and one of my new favourites. So tender, raw and deeply compassionate.

Full of heartache and love.

May We Feed The King - Rebecca Perry 🍐

I think this is more of a 2.5 star read for me, 2 feels a bit low. I can totally see why people love it, unfortunately i’m not people. I’m not a huge lover of choppy poetic prose, you have to be really into the book to understand it and this one never truly had me hooked.

The book starts with an unnamed, un-gendered historian decorating a medieval castle, with period accurate details.
Whilst setting the scene for a medieval King they dive into his story. This is where I got lost.

Part One is the curator, part two is about the King and his reign, part three is back to the curator. A majority of the chapters are super short, this made the story harder to follow. Everyone was nameless, they had titles instead, this distanced me from the story even further.

I understood the books purpose, I think. It was almost a cautionary tale about preserving history. The curator comes to the staggering realisation that our lives are boiled down to a few key points and nothing else. I enjoyed part three the most I think.

I do believe that history should be preserved through all the channels available, this is my main takeaway from the book. Maybe I need someone to explain the plot to me a bit better than how I interpreted it, I think the execution was just too intellectual for me. It needed dumbing down. lol

How do we interpret the past? How will we all be remembered?
I wonder if this will be shortlisted for the booker?
