Last library haul 📚

I’m usually into dark academia at this time of year, so I had my eye on THE SECRET HISTORY by Donna Tartt. I checked it out from the library and had it the full 3 weeks but NIGHT FILM kept my attention during that time… Couldn’t renew it because someone had it on hold 🥲 Luckily, I bought it at $3 on kindle, so hopefully I can finally get to it 🤞🏻

I picked a graphic novel, MY LESBIAN EXPERIENCE WITH LONELINESS, by Kabi Nagata, which explores anxiety and sexuality, and was certainly well written. I was so excited my library had it considering how badly I wanted to read it, but I guess I wasn’t in the mood for it right now so I DNF’d it 🙁

Returned them both sadly, but was able to renew EVERYONE IN THIS ROOM WILL SOMEDAY BE DEAD, by Emily Austin, which (also) explores anxiety and sexuality (plus the fear of death) with some humor, and will hopefully be my ‘lighter’ read in between my darker picks this season 🤞🏻

Autumn possibilities 🍂

Hi, friends & TGIF! This week was a rough one 🙂‍↕️

I picked out a bunch of hopefuls from my very own shelves for the fall season and I *hope* I get to at least 2 or 3 of these. Autumn is rich with gloom which means thrillers, vampires, ghosts, witches, and even some dark history are a must 👀.

Weekend reading 📖

Hi, friends. I started NIGHT FILM by Marisha Pessl this week and am currently glued to it! A book this size (640ish pages) is usually a deterrent for me, but the premise sounded sooo good and I love the fact it has a “found media” component to it. Interspersed with the novel’s chapters are webpages, news articles, transcripts, and a bunch more “evidence,” inviting us right into the case 🕵

A disgraced investigative journalist (Scott) learns about the death of the daughter (Ashley) of an infamous, elusive horror director (Cordova). Scott tried to out Cordova as a predator in the past, which backfired terribly, dampening any other future opportunity. Now that the director’s name is back in the media following the tragic death of his daughter, Scott jumps right back in to investigate the deep, dark corners of Cordova’s world to find out what exactly happened to Ashley: a piano prodigy who was just as an enigma as her father.

It reads like a movie and I want to do nothing else today but bed rot and flip pages 🙂‍↕️

Have you read this one, friends? I love the atmospheric NYC setting and I can’t wait to learn more about the characters 👀

Good morning, friends! Happy Sunday ☀️

I have some errands to run today but no motivation to do so. I just want to grab a coffee and dive right back into these pages ☕️

I’m currently reading FORGET ME NOT by #AlysonDerrick which is a queer, coming-of-age story about two teenaged girls (Nora & Stevie) desperately in love and planning to leave their small backwards, conservative town as soon as possible. They secretly sprung for their dream apartment in California and are so close to freedom they can taste it. But with escape only a few months away, Stevie suffers a tragic fall and develops amnesia, forgetting the last two years. Two years that included a beautiful, yet secret, once-in-a-lifetime love with the girl of her dreams: gone in an instant.

This one is pulling on my heartstrings, friends. I hope Stevie’s memory pulls through 🤞🏻🤞🏻I’m tearing right through it, dying to know.

My errands may have to wait another day 🙂‍↕️

THE SILENT COMPANIONS by #LauraPurcell

This well-worn copy of TSC is from my library and is currently keeping my Sunday Scaries away. The half-gone drink here is a strawberry daydream refresher from DD. 😋 The perfect reading ‘companion.’ 😉

I’ve got about 100 pages left and as of this morning, I was going to make it a goal to finish this book today. Idk if I can pull that off tonight lol but at least I’m putting a dent in it now 💪🏻

TSC is a historical ghost story about a pregnant widow who moves to her house in the country after her husband dies. She soon realizes the townspeople are not so fond of her and while she’s preparing for her baby and mourning her husband, these strange wooden “companions” keep popping up all over the house, resembling past residents and even herself. The book switches POV between the 1600s and 1800s, delving into the ghastly experiences all the inhabitants have had in this house.

It’s not exactly scary, but a little creepy and well written. I can’t wait to uncover more of the history behind those unsettling wooden figures 👀

It’s been a minute since I tore through a book so fast. I’m about 100 pages from finishing this banger and honestly I couldn’t even guess how it’s going to end. It’s looking like it might be my first 5⭐️ in a while 🤞🏻

When in a funk, switch up the genre and format✨

Boy oh boy has my reading waned these past couple of months. I finished two horror hardcovers and can’t seem to start a third. I haven’t touched my kindle since January (and there’s still a lot of battery left!) so I figured I’d switch from physical to ebook. Oh, and throw in a sapphic romcom👩🏻‍🤝‍👩🏼💕

GIRL NEXT DOOR is a romcom about two high school classmates and nextdoor neighbors who reunite years later after one of them had written a romcom with a character verryyy similar to the other 👀. MC works freelance for a gossip site and it’s brought to her attention that a book came out under a pen name describing events that happened back in high school down to the tiniest details. She’s sent back to her hometown to hopefully expose the elusive and mysterious author, who is obviously Nora, her childhood nextdoor neighbor. MC is incredibly hesitant to expose Nora, but getting closer to her means learning more about the two of them that maybe she’s never noticed before. Perhaps they’ve always had feelings for each other 👀, and perhaps they’ve always misunderstood each other 🤔

I’m biting my nails with anxiety because I’m nervous how Nora is going to take it when she learns why exactly MC is back in town. UGH that’s going to be tough lol

Other than that, it’s a quiet, yet productive Sunday. Hope your weekend is amazing, friends. Happy reading ♥️

Halfway through #PrideMonth and I haven’t posted a thing to celebrate. Shame on me! 😉

But perfect time to reminisce about my visit to @kissandtaleromancebookshop a few weeks ago. It’s always busy when I’m in the area on some weekends (which is good, we love a busy indie bookstore 🥰), so I never pop in as often as I’d like. The store is so cute and fun and the vibes are exquisite ♥️

What’s your favorite bookstore, friends? More indie bookstores are popping up near-ish me and I may need to plan a crawl one day 👀🥰

Oh, hello ♥️. Nothing like dropping off the face of the earth for a couple of months 🫠

I read maybe one book since (PET SEMATARY, 3⭐️), but the urge to read is starting to pick up again 🤞🏻

THIS WRETCHED VALLEY is a horror novel where 4 climbers searching for new rock to climb disappear in the woods. Eventually, 3 bodies start to pop up, all in different stages of decay. With one hiker still missing, the mystery is growing darker: were they murdered? Sacrificed? Cannibalized 👀? Is there something paranormal at play?

I feel like I’m getting The Descent vibes from this one, but it’s still too early to confirm 🙂‍↕️

JULIE CHAN IS DEAD by #LiannZhang

I’ve been on the hunt for this book for what seems like months and my library finally had it in stock 😊 I’m around 130 pages in it and the story so far is wild. Julie and Chloe are twins separated very young when their parents died. Chloe was adopted by a rich white family and Julie was left with biological family members who didn’t seem to want her. Chloe strikes it big becoming a rich influencer while Julie feels stuck as a cashier at a grocery store. Their lives couldn’t be more different. When Chloe is found dead, Julie takes this opportunity to become Chloe and live her rich, fabulous influencer life. However, the process catapults her down into a rabbit hole, learning more about her sister and the dark parts of her life she kept hidden.

It’s written so well, and it’s helping pull me from a slump I was falling into, bouncing between books lately.
