“Much of life is timing and circumstance, I see that now.”

★★★★/5

This story was so complex, unfair, and so deeply American. I truly believe this will be a classic someday because this book had LAYERS, and I could talk about it forever.

Celestial and Roy are newlyweds in the New South who are living the American dream, when Roy is wrongfully convicted and sentenced to 12 years in prison. Through letters written over years of Roy’s incarceration, you feel the tension, disillusionment, and resentment build over time until there is absolutely no connection. However, when Roy is released early, he expects to pick up where he and Celestial left off only to find that she has already moved on with their best friend, Andre.

I won’t say any more, but these characters are so realistic, and this story unfolds in a way that is so heartbreaking and unflinching in its portrayal of being Black in the American South.

🥀✂️ NEW FREIDA

★★★/5

Why was everybody trying my good sis Deborah???

Listen, once you make an enemy out of Debbie, you may as well take steps to join the witness protection program. This was Amy Dunne levels of poetic justice.

Everybody in this book had Deborah bent back sideways. She was like if Millie used at least two brain cells instead of the one cell she splits with Enzo.

If you think about this a little bit, none of it really makes sense. Ninety percent of this book was a desperate housewife in a lifetime movie; and then the last 10% I’m like Freida girl what is going on???

Also also who do I need to get on the phone for these to be adapted into Lifetime movies?? I don’t need anything else going to theaters; these all need to go straight to streaming.

Wow, this started off unhinged.

★★★

I really had to take a second to gather my thoughts for this one. I loved the concept, I loved the elements, I see what it was trying to do, I understand the message it was trying to convey, but it really just sort of fell flat.

I liked the graphic writing and the portrayal of the insatiable wanting of teen girlhood. I was thoroughly uncomfortable and so disgusted every time I remembered she was a literal child. This was written in a way that wouldn’t let the reader forget.

I just wish there was more depth and exploration of the characters. We know Waldo is very self-aware and just searching for (and trying) ANYTHING to fill a void, so she becomes obsessed with her bum loser teacher who hates his life and has to manipulate teenage girls, but all of this was surface level and there was a lot of telling, not showing.

This book does deal with delicate subject matter, but this just felt like it was written for shock factor and for the sake of being provocative. I was a little disappointed because I wanted to like this, and I don’t really have strong feelings about it. I think it’s worth a read. I know this is one kind of story in this genre, but if you’re looking for what this book tries to convey, I would just say pick up My Dark Vanessa. by @readwithdes

So much went on in this book that I don’t even know where to start.

★★★★

I am always so impressed with the amount of research Jodi Picoult puts into her books, and the level of care and nuance she uses when covering sensitive subjects and real issues. With that being said, the subject matter is HEAVY and this story was FULLY dramatic. Especially after the plot twist—which I would’ve been standing in the back of that court room gagged for my life.

Just know, she is giving you every single social justice issue, injustice, and hot topic in America, and you know what? AS SHE SHOULD. Stories like these are so important because the reader is able to gain perspective and insight into human beings with intersecting identities and move toward creating a better world and safer space for the people in it.

The beekeeping talk was a bit pedantic for me, but I enjoyed how it was used as a sort of mirror to the behaviors and relationships of the characters and how the honey was representative of the healing process. I’m not sure how I feel about the ending, but everybody seemed to be at peace, and that’s all I was really hoping for. by @readwithdes
