Sometimes support means working on systems change

For the past year, Ready Set Push and members of the Southern Crescent Breastfeeding Coalition have been looking closely at an important question:

Why aren’t mothers with babies in the NICU leaving the hospital with a breast pump before they go home?

We’re working with community and hospital partners to better understand where the gaps are, what hospitals are doing well, what needs to change and how we can help ensure people get the access to breast pumps they need.

This is not always visible work, it happens quietly. We hold meetings, do interviews, critique referral processes. Most importantly, we try to provide solutions too.

Through a partnership with Breastfeed Atlanta we have a pump closet. This means when families attend our cafes they can leave with a breast pump if they need it. It’s not the ideal set up but we are standing in the gap while working on the system change.

This is what we do every day. This week, we get to celebrate it. by @readysetpushinc

Access to breastfeeding support isn’t only about creating more programs. We need more people who are prepared to provide the support.

Workforce development has become an important part of what we do and how we do it.

We’ve invested in training community based breastfeeding specialists who can take what they learn back into their own communities. They do this as counselors, in their roles as doulas, our Ready Set Latch cafe facilitators and aspiring future IBCLC’s.

We believe families should have access to knowledgeable breastfeeding support in the places where they live and get it from people who look like them.

We want to create pathways for people who want to become IBCLC’s and help them become part of the lactation workforce.

We trained 10 in 2025 are now on our 2nd cohort of 10 focused on rural GA who will graduate this year in September 2026. The 1st cohort are busy leading our Ready Set Latch cafes in Clayton and Fulton counties. We can’t wait to see what the 2nd cohort will accomplish. by @readysetpushinc

Today officially begins Black Breastfeeding Week 2026.

This years theme WE ALL WE GOT resonates with RSP because we work with families everyday.

Breastfeeding support is communal, it could be a grandmother, a partner supporting a mother by attending a cafe together, a WIC counselor referring to us, a nurse who refers to us before the family is discharged or someone who got support from us in the past and knows exactly where to send that person for help.

Our role is to help build the conditions that make your breastfeeding journey successful.

We are humbled and honored to support you all on the journey. by @readysetpushinc

When people hear that we offer breastfeeding support they may picture one appointment. We do so much more than that. We’ve worked hard to build a solid foundation and we do that partly with our relationships with academic institutions.

We’ve built:

Parental breastfeeding education
Ready Set Latch Community Breastfeeding Cafes
Certified Breastfeeding Specialist Training
Partnerships with hospitals and academic institutions
Work to improve access to breast pumps for NICU families
MAMMA and safer access to informal human milk sharing

We celebrate all of our infrastructure that make this possible.

Our photo highlights our first year Emory School of Medicine students from the Community Learning Social Medicine program. We also have our GA Technical school intern who spent her whole sophomore year with us helping us build.

We are so grateful for the support and grateful for the services that we provide. by @readysetpushinc

World Breastfeeding Month is this month and specifically black breastfeeding week that starts on
August 25th. We are starting the celebration a little early!

This years theme is “WE ALL WE GOT: 15 Years of Community, Care and Collective Power”. This theme represents the work we do so beautifully.

Lactation access and support should never depend on a family having enough information, enough money, the right insurance, the right hospital, the right provider or simply stumbling upon the help.

It truly takes a village. All week, we’ll show you what the village looks like at Ready Set Push. It means education, support from our academic partners, community lactation support, workforce development, donor human milk access and advocating for more access for all.

We are celebrating this week with a giveaway. One winner will receive a $100 gift card

No purchase necessary. Give us a like and a follow and learn about what we do everyday to make access to lactation support every day for all families.

Entries close Saturday August 29th at 11:59pm.
Winner announced Sunday, August 30th. Scan the QR code to enter.
