Lameness is the leading cause of early retirement in horses. Dr. Karsten Key shares his seven go-to tips for prevention, from surface variation to fitness building to rest.

His last tip: analyze your horse weekly with RealHorse.

Catching a mild asymmetry early means treating a simple issue, not managing a full-blown lameness case later.

Did you get it right? We asked, you answered (some correctly) and now here’s the full analysis.

Look at how in the “what to make of it” summary the app tells us that it could be a lower neck or mid body suspensory ligament dysfunction.

The app does not diagnose, but it helps you narrow down the issue area so your horse care team can care for your horse.

Most lameness cases develop over time, catch them early (before eyes can see it) and the recovery is faster, better, and cheaper.

We recommend analyzing your horse weekly: create your horse’s baseline, keep track of asymmetries, catch them as they creep up and sort them before they become actual lameness issues.

Your horse’s core muscles, in the stomach and the back, flex and extend the back. They work with both concentric and eccentric contraction when you’re cantering, so cantering is how you build them.

The @realhorseapp measures this extension and flexion as your horse’s back range of motion (ROM). Our back flexion ROM feature is validated in peer-reviewed research.
