This was 6 months ago of the "Brown is Beautiful" cultural mural in progress. 6 months before that it was a culture clash if it ever saw the light of day. IT'S DONE NOW! Thank you to the cultural art warriors & community leaders who saw it through.

A lively, backstory from artist-activist Ana (@alb40804) from an interview session for a Larry Itliong documentary.

Ana touches on the challenges & dynamics within just one San Jose community to create representative art that contributes to the culture & history of a community & city.

From the opposition to create a 3-story mural near SJ City Hall of lesser-known labor leaders & civil rights activists, Delores Huerta & Larry Itliong — another big beautiful brown mural is slated to start this week at Backesto Park on 13th Street.

It was even more challenging to get this one accepted — because a majority are indifferent or unknowingly stuck in their perception...for generations, even our own families. This may seem small, but it is an example of what's happening on a much larger, sickening scale today.

The long & short of it: we need more & other types of grassroots efforts & support like this to save us from being erased (gentrified is the non-threatening term) before we're completely indoctrinated & oppressed with nothing left for our souls & our past.

This 3-minute video is only the tip-of-the-iceberg of massive art displays on or in museums, basilicas, restaurants, buildings & roads in Mexico City (also this phone video does no justice to the sheer size, texture and historical experience vs. actually feeling it in person). Since their revolutionary war in the 1920s, it's been a city, nation and people that has long-embraced art to help educate and unite.

The Mexican Muralist Movement emerged in the 1920s to assist in re-establishing and finding the nation's identity after the social unrest from a 45-year long dictatorship. The overall movement was ripe with all the political dynamics and battle for truth and representation similar to today.

That 1920s art movement was led by a few select men: Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros. About 10 years later, key women finally emerged from a gender battle to contribute heavily to the muralist movement with the likes of Aurora Reyes Flores, Elena Huerta Muzquiz, and Rina Lazo.

This personal 2025 visit to Mexico City is one outcome of "The Muralists' Beautiful Pain" documentary we produced a few years ago —  to personally experience the influence on many cultural movements around the world, including the Chicano Mural Movement in the U.S. in the 1960s & 70s. AND its continuing influence to the renaissance of current artist-activists who understand the priority and upkeep of their rich history and identity, especially today.

From the making of "The Muralists' Beautiful Pain" and its many viewings and interactions at global film festivals, the experience has been a continued education that started with the Latino artist-activists from our documentary work and their artistic fight and creative contributions to support their local communities' long-standing culture and identity in the so-called "melting pot" of America.

Also remember how this all truly started.

The global effect of colonialism AND imperialism from 100s of years ago is still so profound and so deeply pierced in our psyche, our DNA and our everyday existence. At the least, continue your education and duty to re-absorb your culture & history, unapologetically ✊🏼 taken in Mexico City by @realitymaniacs

The most titanic wave of change in anyone’s lifetime is certainly forming. “AI" is so much more than robots & driverless cars. One assignment here at the 2025 Nvidia Conference was covering young brilliant scientists, engineers, physicists, etc. who’re also educating and making aware the tectonic shift that will happen to upcoming generations, regardless of what they want to do or be in their lives. The revolution is happening on many more fronts than we see or know - make yourself aware (or is it too late for us older generations who’re already too jaded?) taken in San Jose Convention Center by @realitymaniacs

Help those who are still oblivious & unaware to be aware. Fight back, boycott, lend your skills, lend your time. You can even fight back quietly, but give your support to those who are courageous enough to speak loudly on our behalf.
