I’m launching my substack newsletter today! Subscribe to Native America for an Indigenous perspective on news & history in your inbox monthly.
Indigenous communities deserve the same standard of journalism as the rest of the country, but rarely receive it from non-Native media outlets. My writing seeks to correct this. From the census, to COVID, to the Supreme Court, I focus on deep and timely reporting that sheds light on issues of national importance.

Hey folks. My reading and screen time is getting better, but is still limited. Meaning I am not on top of the comments on here. So if I am slow to respond to a discussion, that is what's going on. I appreciate your engagement with my content–it means a lot to me. Hope to be more present in these conversations in the future. by @rebeccanagle

Content warning: this post mentions suicide.

You know what's actually rare? Gender-affirming surgery for minors. According to a Harvard study, only 0.0021% of older teens have had one, and most are chest surgeries. Just 1% of all trans people later regret surgery.

You know what's not rare? Trans youth attempting suicide. Studies consistently show a third to half of all trans youth will try.

The data points one direction: what protects trans kids is supportive adults. In our communities, that means showing up for all of our relatives. 🏳️‍⚧️

*Trigger warning: this post mentions suicide.*

Republicans are trying to ban gender-affirming health care for minors under the banner of protecting kids. But what are they actually protecting kids from?

Gender-affirming surgery for minors is extremely rare. According to a Harvard study, only 0.0021% of older teens (ages 15-17) have had gender-affirming surgery.

You know what's not rare? Trans youth attempting suicide. Studies consistently show a third to half of all trans youth will attempt suicide.

Did you know the majority of kids who receive gender- affirming care aren’t trans?

A recent study found that 97% of chest surgeries on minors were performed on cis boys. And those surgeries are actually way, way, way more common than trans kids getting surgery.

Right now, over half of U.S. states ban gender-affirming care for minors and more bans are on the ballot. Those bans could hurt kids who aren’t even trans.

The government shouldn't be regulating anyone's private medical decisions. by @rebeccanagle

I’m continuing my series on Native women on the ballot with a look at two more Native women running for office.

Tracie Yellowman Tso (Navajo) is a pipe welder from San Juan County running for Utah's 69th House District. It's the largest district in Utah by area, and it includes both rural and tribal communities.

Celestine Stadnick (Oglala Lakota) is a school principal running for South Dakota's District 27 Senate seat. That district spans four counties, Badlands National Park, and the Pine Ridge Reservation.

Over the past few weeks I've profiled Native women running for governor, the U.S. Senate, Congress, and state legislatures. Native women aren't just on the ballot at one level of government. They're on ballots everywhere. That's something to celebrate.

Election Day is Tuesday, November 3. Make a plan to vote. Vote.gov has your polling place, your state's ID rules, and your polling hours. From the statehouse to the Senate, Native women are showing up. Let's show up for them too. 🗳️ by @rebeccanagle

In case you haven't heard, there's another Native woman running for U.S. Senate!

N'Kiyla Jasmine Thomas is a citizen of the Chickasaw Nation. She won the Democratic nomination in a runoff, becoming the first Democratic Socialist to win a major party's nomination in Oklahoma.

And that's not as unlikely as it sounds: Oklahoma has a long history of socialism going back to its founding.

This Tuesday, the choice belongs to Oklahoma voters.🗳 by @rebeccanagle

Next up in my Native women on the ballot series: Tracie Yellowman Tso (Navajo) and Celestine Stadnick (Oglala Lakota).

These two Native women are running in local or what’s often called down-ballot races. These races get a lot less media attention than Congress and federal elections, but they are important.

Did you know Republicans are trying to use transphobia to get rid of abortion?

In Missouri, politicians who put Amendment 3 on the ballot bundled the abortion ban with a ban on gender-affirming care for trans kids.

These are private medical decisions. Amendment 3 hands them to the government.

Polls show it's too close to call. And if it works here, the same playbook is coming to Kansas, Arizona, and Montana. by @rebeccanagle
