YOU DID IT: AND I’M CRYING

What in the WORLD. A few days ago the Kickstarter was at, like, 25% and I was losing sleep beyond how I always lose sleep…

But then people just showed UP. I think I’ve been crying from joy and gratitude for days and days.

There’s a whole community of artists that you are funding. This is a labor of love for Ji and I - but we have always been committed to our people and you’ve made that possible!!!

12 HOURS LEFT: JI TANZER

The amount of times I had to do this video.

I couldn’t make it through without crying. This isn’t the best take but at least I made it.

@jitanzer and I have spent half of our lives working and making art together and it is the very best thing in the world EVER. His gifts can be heard and felt throughout Shadow Work, from his killer drums, to how good my vocal takes turned out when I was too exhausted to have perspective, to the unseen lift of childcare and the deep work of moral support through the long stretches of uncertainty.

Shadow Work, and indeed any creative endeavor I’ve undertaken, would not be possible without the support of Ji.

In the words of Ella Mai,
“Get you one of these”

20 HOURS TO GO: TODD SICKAFOOSE

@todd_sickafoose is a legend for a reason. I knew Todd would be the perfect person to mix what The Willamette Week calls “dense, maximalist music”, and boy did he DELIVER. I could write an essay about how incredible it was to work with Todd and see him in his element.

Shadow Work would not be the album it is without Todd’s mixing wizardry, producer mentality and grace, and even his electric bass on Minotaur and Chariot. Another quote from Daniel Bromfield with The Willamette Week is apropos:

“There’s a lot going on in any given song, but they never feel overstuffed or overwhelming.”

That’s Todd’s magic right there. ✨

Lastly, I want to thank Todd for buoying me through dismantling Minotaur. That was scary, but we got through it and made it the song it needed to be! At the end of the last mixing session Todd said, “We almost broke that song. But we didn’t!” 😂

35 HOURS TO GO: VINYL, VINYL!

@objectpermrecords in Salem, Oregon has been nothing but professional, kind, and accommodating! We had a ridiculous deadline, a truly lengthy album, and tricky problems with the stamper. They met every obstacle with grace, enthusiasm, and generosity.

Jason even drove the vinyl to the release show and was at the merch table! He’s the best at breaking down how a record is made, and is the kind of person that makes me believe in good people doing good work. Please consider getting your next vinyl produced by Object Permanence!

@photojq really needs no introduction, but if you haven’t encountered the iconic photographer’s work, please go to his page and check out the years and YEARS of unforgettable live music shots, album art, and beyond.

This was a fun little deep dive into the concept for the album cover! I’ve long been obsessed with @marthagrahamdance Martha Graham not only influenced the cover, but partially inspired the first song “Minotaur” with her work “Errand Into the Maze”.

If you need to record a behemoth ensemble (live) that needs approximately 8,246 isolation booths and sight lines for all and will take up all the channels — you can’t do better than @thehallowedhallspdx

Also? You can’t do better than to have @justinphelpsrecording running your session with his trademark calm, endurance, focus, and joy! This man is a gem and we are all so lucky to have him produce, engineer, and master music and audiobooks.

A note from the Artistic Director:

In my 10 years as the Director of PJCE Records, I have never seen an artist tackle a project as ambitious as Rebecca Sanborn's Shadow Work. PJCE has been there since its inception in 2021, so I was thrilled when Rebecca approached us about recording the album with our large ensemble and releasing it on PJCE Records.

Just like producing a season of concerts with a 12-member jazz band, an album of this scale — there are almost 30 artists involved — is a gargantuan feat. Grant funding and album sales only cover a small portion of the costs. With that in mind, I interrupt your regularly scheduled PJCE communications with an important request.

Will you help fund Shadow Work TODAY?

While PJCE Records partners with artists to release their albums, individual artists are responsible for recording and producing their own music. Funds raised from this Kickstarter campaign help Rebecca bridge the funding gap between the three (3!) grants she received from the Regional Arts & Culture Council, Music Oregon, and the Holler Fund and the significant costs of recording a body of work at this scale.

3 DAYS: THE STRINGS!

@bizarrestarstrings absolutely nailed Kyleen King’s gorgeous arrangement of the final ballad on Shadow Work, “Not Knowing”.

@kyleen_king @pattikingpdx @annacellosinger @brycenspice delivered the precision, flexibility, professionalism, and fun (!) for which they widely are known. It was a treasure to have them on this project.

I think we got it on the second take? I’m telling you: WORLD CLASS musicians. We wrapped in time at the end of a 9 hour session for me to make the last half of the Troye Sivan concert, lol. So thank you also for that!
