Five years. 29 musicians and artists. One incredibly ambitious project.

Portland musician and former Echo Fund grantee Rebecca Sanborn has released Shadow Work, an eight song, 50 minute musical journey that began with late night piano sessions after putting her daughter to bed.

What started as a personal creative process grew into a collaborative project involving artists across Oregon, with support from RACC, the Holler Fund, and MusicOregon's Echo Fund.

Produced by Todd Sickafoose, the album is Rebecca's first solo release in 20 years. It even features a special appearance from her daughter on “Nadia's Lullaby.”

This is the kind of creative work we're proud to have supported through the Echo Fund. 🧡

Shadow Work is out now on PJCE Records.

I have known Rebecca Sanborn for god knows how long. I suppose we would have first met during the aughts in Portland when Blue Cranes was recommended to me by BFF Jason Powers, who prolly said something characteristically understated like “check out my friend Reed’s band, they’re great.” I witnessed one show at Holocene and lo and behold, they ended up being so much more than great, so much so that I became a superfan & evangelist, as contrary to my nature as that is.

It certainly was not my duty to do so, but I could not help but shout at people who had no idea why I was shouting, “you’ve got to see this fucking band - I don’t care if you have an emo haircut and grind your third wave coffee with a razor from the 1700’s, git yr cuffed Japanese selvedge jeans in there and just listen.”

Yes, Portland was like that back then. Kinda annoying but full of absolute brilliance (fashion aside). We tolerated a lot but it was worth it.

Then somehow, I was asked to do some album art and concert posters for that project and became pals with Becca as she started branching out into her own music and finding her own voice outside of Blue Cranes. I’ve also been the art guy at PJCE since the very beginning (almost as long) and when I heard they were putting out this project, I could not have been more proud to contribute. It’s fucking stunning and full of everyone and everything good. Check out that phenomenal cover photo by old pal Jason Quigley - the whole gangs here and on fire.

They are trying to wrap this all up & give some back to the twenty nine other artists that invested their time and expertise into Shadow Work. There’s a Kickstarter and a day left to fill that gap.

Listen, I’ve already gotten paid so this is no self-serving exercise for me, other than for the love of the project and the folks involved.

So have a gander at the link in my bio and see if it’s something you’d like to support. It's all right here @rebeccasanborn

Thanks for reading this far.

A note from the Artistic Director:

In my 10 years as the Director of PJCE Records, I have never seen an artist tackle a project as ambitious as Rebecca Sanborn's Shadow Work. PJCE has been there since its inception in 2021, so I was thrilled when Rebecca approached us about recording the album with our large ensemble and releasing it on PJCE Records.

Just like producing a season of concerts with a 12-member jazz band, an album of this scale — there are almost 30 artists involved — is a gargantuan feat. Grant funding and album sales only cover a small portion of the costs. With that in mind, I interrupt your regularly scheduled PJCE communications with an important request.

Will you help fund Shadow Work TODAY?

While PJCE Records partners with artists to release their albums, individual artists are responsible for recording and producing their own music. Funds raised from this Kickstarter campaign help Rebecca bridge the funding gap between the three (3!) grants she received from the Regional Arts & Culture Council, Music Oregon, and the Holler Fund and the significant costs of recording a body of work at this scale.
.
The Kickstarter closes on Thursday, September 24th at 9 am PT, so opt in to art, pick out an incredible offering from Rebecca, and pledge your support TODAY.

Rebecca Sanborn's new album Shadow Work is truly amazing. She did amazing work on this record and I want you all to hear it. Will you help her over the finish line with her Kickstarter? Find the link in my bio.

It took a big community of artists to make this record happen, and we need a big community of supporters to pitch in! These are the kinds of projects that are rare because of the risk involved. Most folks look at the time budget required for an album with 18 musicians, 6 arrangers and 3 audio technicians and say no thanks buddy. But Rebecca stepped into that, and I admire her so much for it.

The 2026 @montavillajazzfest was an absolute blast!

I had the opportunity to sit down ahead of the festival and chat with @brandonleecierley @domobranch and @losteele , if you missed it... you can catch past broadcasts available on demand via MixCloud (link in bio).

Some more highlights from this year's festival included @dat.bari.sax / @wenipt , @rebeccasanborn and the @portlandjazzcomposers ensemble 'Shadow Work' album release show, a pair of multisensory performances from @northpolepdx and @and.or_you + @mosleywotta . @de_dae_day The Collective left a "melody in my soul" (courtesy of @davasate_jr ) that I can't stop thinking about.

🎺 @simpsonaire always puts on a show, and I was lucky enough to see him perform with 4 different groups over the weekend.

Montavilla Jazz has become one of my favorite local events and this year was the best year yet! Let's do it again Labor Day weekend 2027!

Love that years from now @rebeccasanborn daughter will have the memory of this extraordinary night and a record to spin with her and her mom immortalized. We loved having Rebecca by to press it with us and are honored to be a final stage of a years long creative process. You can get the album on Kickstarter. Link in bio.
