Sometimes the work isn’t about adding more—it’s about obsessing over the details no one consciously notices.
For this Epic Aircraft film, we approached the airplane the same way you’d approach photographing a luxury automobile. Every reflection, every highlight, every shadow was intentional.
We transformed an aircraft hangar into a controlled studio environment, shaping light across the airplane’s curves and carefully managing reflections with oversized bounce and negative fill. We even wet the hangar floor to create subtle reflections that added depth and elegance to each frame. Every lighting cue was designed to reveal another detail of the aircraft.
The film also features a walk-and-talk with Epic Aircraft CEO Doug King. Keeping someone naturally lit while moving alongside a highly reflective airplane is its own challenge, but it’s one we love solving. A carefully crafted lighting approach and a floating camera move allowed us to guide viewers seamlessly through the aircraft without ever drawing attention to the technique behind it.
That’s our favorite kind of filmmaking—the kind where the craftsmanship disappears, leaving only the feeling.
Huge thanks to an incredible crew that brought this vision to life. #THProd #TuckerHessProductions #EpicAircraft by @rebelsuncalifa

I was working at the ferry building and caught this beautiful site out of the corner of my eye. Time to go hunting! #huntersmoon #sfbaybridge #ferrybuilding #moon taken in San Francisco Ferry Building by @rebelsuncalifa

A colleague recently offered up his old Freyer shirt (mine had long since fallen apart) and I leapt at the opportunity to preserve it, and honor the legendary Bay Area gaffer, Arthur Freyer. This will forever hang on the wall of our shop to remind all future g/e generations of the grace, kindness, and moral fortitude that Arthur possessed. He left us way too early, but his legacy lives on. If you knew him, stories are welcome! #freyerlighting #arthurfreyerlighting #arthurfreyer #whatwouldfreyerdo #bayareagaffer #gaffer #legend #buckleup #voteoften taken in Rebel Sun Lighting Grip Camera by @rebelsuncalifa

Yes, I know how to play chess. Yes, I'm starting to wear reading glasses. Yes, this was a fun shoot. No, Hunter is not on social media!

For those interested in the lighting set up: K5600 Joker LED 300 with ellipsoidal attachment focused on the chess board. Far side key with an Aputure 600d and chimera pancake lantern. 12x20 solid for the background. DF50 for atmosphere.

It's not just the conversion of electrons into photons that inspires me. Algorithms, formulas, and lots of fancy science make up the calculus of my lighting. #gaferrsgaffing #fancyscience #standingin by @rebelsuncalifa
