“Bury My Heart in Baghdad” is military fiction rooted in Colonel Byron Owen’s experiences as an infantry platoon commander in Iraq. Set in 2006, it follows NCIS Special Agent Jessica Cortez as she joins a Marine platoon to investigate a possible war crime. What begins as an investigation becomes something much harder: a confrontation with what happens when rules written in black and white meet a battlefield painted entirely in gray.

At its heart is a question of morality. Do you do something because it is right by the book, or because you believe it is simply the right thing to do? Owen refuses to make the answer easy. Through Cortez, Staff Sergeant Rosch, Lawson, Rodriguez, and the rest of the platoon, we see Marines forced to make decisions where legality, loyalty, survival, revenge, and conscience collide. Sometimes every available choice carries a cost.

The combat is violent, but the book’s greatest strength is what happens around it. Marines joke, fight, grieve, protect one another, and slowly absorb what war demands of them. Lawson becomes especially important because he represents something easily lost in that environment: the ability to remain a good man while becoming an effective warrior. As another Marine observes, the rules are not only there to protect others. They can protect Marines from becoming the very monsters they are fighting.

Owen’s central warning is that war touches everyone who enters it. Leadership and discipline cannot erase that damage, but they can keep it from consuming a unit. “Bury My Heart in Baghdad” ultimately asks something Marines and veterans may recognize immediately: when the mission is over and the shooting stops, how much of yourself did you manage to bring home?

For those of you who care and want clarification on some things related to new GRC/ARC pipeline: “Everyone pursuing the Reconnaissance Marine path must attend ITB, including non-03 lateral movers.
• Enlisted Marines attend GRC before ARC; officers bypass GRC and enter ARC directly.
• GRC combines the former individual and patrol phases, plus one week of marksmanship.
• Graduates advance to ARC.
• Marines who fail GRC may be recycled or sent to the fleet as 0311s.
• GRC does not allow DORs. Refusing to continue is handled as RTT—refusal to train—which can begin administrative separation.
• GRC classes begin around 100 students. Class 1-26 experienced roughly 50% attrition; Class 2-26 graduated approximately 60-plus students.
• ARC permits DORs.
• ARC primarily consists of Rtap-pool phase, knots, a largely copied amphibious package, and one patrol leading into the “death hike.”’

A delightful morning series of events as BRC 2-22 flip flops between a 1500 Meter pool fin, and practicing for the “drown proofing” portion of the Recon Aquatic Competency Test (RACT) at Recon Training Company (RTC), AITB-W, SOI-W aboard Camp Pendleton.

The RACT is practiced on 12 foot depth tables, if a Roper (student) misses the platform he’s in for some hurt going down to 16.5 ft deep. (Makes a BIG difference). In comparison SEAL BUDs students conduct this at a 9 ft depth.

Students (PIGs) of the Scout Sniper Course (SSC) class 1-22 experiencing the joys of stalking on one of the many stalk lanes utilized aboard Camp Pendleton CA. The students were comprised of a mixture of Recon Marines and Marines from the various infantry Sniper Platoons across the USMC.

In the same fashion, the instructors were comprised of a mixture of Snipers from the Recon Battalion’s and the Various Sniper Platoons from across the USMC. The West Coast Sniper School House fell under Recon Training Company at AITB-W, SOI-W before the traditional Sniper School Houses were deactivated.

This ought to bring back some memories for many folks of Bear Crawling or Doing Lunges with all your gear soaked in sweat in a ghille suit back to the start points. (With bits of branches, dirt, poison oak, etc. all over you going down your blouse 😆😩)
