Shoulder injuries are a primary cause of morbidity in Special Operations Forces (SOF), accounting for 19–24% of all musculoskeletal injuries due to high-intensity training,, heavy load carriage, and repetitive,, overhead, movement. Common conditions include rotator cuff tears, shoulder instability/dislocations, and impingement syndrome, often resulting from, rigorous, tactical, operations.

•Strengthen the Rotator Cuff: Focus on strengthening the small muscles that hold the humerus in the joint, such as with elastic band rotations or specialized devices like ShoulderSphere.

•Stabilize the Scapula: Strengthen the middle and lower trapezius and rhomboids to keep shoulder blades positioned correctly and avoid impingement.

•Balance “Push/Pull” Ratios: For every pressing exercise (push-ups, overhead press), perform at least two pulling exercises (rows, pull-ups) to avoid overdeveloping the front of the shoulder.

•Improve Mobility: Regularly perform mobility exercises, such as wall slides, to maintain a full range of motion, particularly in the shoulders and thoracic spine.

•Modify High-Volume Training: If pain occurs, reduce the volume of overhead presses, dips, and bench presses.

•Focus on Muscular Endurance: Shoulder muscles should be trained for endurance to handle long-duration missions and load-bearing.

•Single-Arm Training: Utilize single-arm exercises to allow for a better range of motion and increased stability.

16 years ago during the workup for my 5th Combat Deployment our Force Recon Platoon was tasked with providing R&S for a company sized raid from A Company 1st Battalion 1st Marines (1/1) for the 13th MEU off the USS Boxer (LHD-4). We would later dub this mission the winner of “The worst patrol of the year award” 😆

At the time our Force platoon (Callsign Jaeger) was living aboard the USS Boxer and our Platoon Sergeant MSgt D.A. White lived in the berthing with us. He watched our entire planning process from start to finish carefully before we went up to the Wardroom to brief (at the time) Col Coffman the MEU CO. (He retired as Maj General Coffman in 2019. I last spoke with him after my retirement in 2023). Capt Adam Burch was our Platoon Commander. I was his class leader in BRC when he was a 1stLt. It’s a small world in this community.

My TL at the time was SSgt Josh Basso. He and I were both ATLs in the battle of Shewan in 2008, he was in the first vehicle that had 5 RPGs slam into it and I was sure he was dead. After I killed every rag trying to get to their vehicle I was joyfully surprised to learn that he had lived. Now he was the TL and I was his ATL. We had a very special working relationship.

Col Coffman was always impressed with our briefing abilities. We laid out our plan for a HALO insertion into a special surveyed DZ for this mission at AFA 37 up in the 409 Impact area NW of the DeLuz Training Town which was far east in Camp Pendleton near Fallbrook Naval Weapons station. The terrain there is heinous. We would report on pattern of life, EA Rep, and a long list of other reports so the Raid Force would have everything they needed to attack this objective.

As we concluded our brief and were given the green light for our mission. Top D.A. White chimed in with an additional detail. He informed us all that he would be tracking / hunting us while out on this mission.
