RECORD REWIND #EP1

This is Philips Canada, roughly dates back to 1969–71. The GA146 changer its selling was in production from 1968 to 1971, and the Willowdale, Ontario address on the free-booklet offer pins it to the Canadian market…This is the moment hi-fi stopped being a piece of ā€˜furniture’ and became a hobby.

Just a ā€œCase Historyā€ framing... John Hamilton, bachelor, 26, 12x18 apartment…is hypothetical... Just simply abiding to the rules of ads back then … meant Philips had to legally admit that John didn’t exist.

This system came to under $365, which is somewhere north of $3,000 today. An 18-watt amp and a walnut-finish changer with a smoky acrylic dust cover..

Noticed the staging?… shag carpet, the woman in yellow, the guy sprawled in the beanbag mid-conversation. The stereo wasn’t sold as gear. It was sold as evidence that you had taste…. by @records.athome

There’s nostalgic bias here…but I’ll stand by the consensus: this is his best. Continuum is easily in my top ten albums. After listening several times it has continued to grow on me with each listen.. Something about this one just hits differently..the recording quality, the blues focus, the maturity that separates him from the kid on ā€˜Room For Squares’. It also kills the idea that his music is generic radio pop…

And it’s precisely the voice, soft and sinuous, that gently caresses the listener’s ears supported by the round and warm arrangements of musicians …And in the end, John Mayer is exactly this, a musician aware of his own qualities.. and goddamn he does it so well!!!

Continuum to me is a classic of our time…a sparkling and memorable production that deserves all the gushing and media attention that it has been receiving and will continue to get many years from now….

ps: recorded the audio for this one, so whoever’s watching gets the full experience of the LP. by @records.athome

When I was a kid my favorite genre of music was Hip Hop simply because I was heavily influenced by the skateboarding and sneaker culture from where I grew up … and I had little interest in Jazz though in hindsight it was everywhere within proximity.. part of jazz was actually deeply influenced by hip hop through rhythmic styles, spoken word poetry..

@guru.jazzmatazz ā€˜s Jazzmatazz album is near and dear to my heart for two reasons: it helped make Jazz music ā€œcoolā€ to me, and expanded my palate into fusion. taken in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia by @records.athome

Is this the antidote to digital fatigue?

Visiting listeningroomkl is a sincere reminder of what music is actually supposed to feel like…Jon is deeply invested in everything from the system, sound, atmosphere and mood…curating stories through an analog medium gives textures that digital files often miss.. It shows you that music was never meant to be a polished product…among other life experiences.

Seeing this kind of genuine passion in KL is truly refreshing… it even puts you at ease..

Betting on the idea that we still want to slow down, sit in a room, and appreciate the unedited emotions of a great album regardless of genre… Whether it’s through records or CDs, it’s an honest mission to bring back the kind of human connection that feels harder to find these days… by @records.athome

The real magic of music from the 50s through the early 2000s is that it feels like a raw confession rather than a polished product…

Back then, songwriters used lyrics as a way to vent their deepest frustrations and joys..it was about personal survival, not brand management.

You can hear this jagged, almost reckless honesty in the words they chose; they weren’t trying to please an algorithm..

You get the sense that the artist’s passion is coming through precisely because of the imperfections..the voice cracks and the unedited emotions…

It’s genuine human connection, something that feels rarer and rarer in today’s world.

It’s rare to find someone who operates purely out of love and passion, but Mohan is exactly that...A breath of fresh air in a world that often feels too technical. He is the heart behind The Groove Room, a space he’s built specifically for music addicts who just want to disappear into the sound.

Mohan is pure passion.. Very pleasant and helpful that immediately puts you at ease, yet he exudes an effortless taste in music that can only come from years of deep listening...He has curated an atmosphere that is unapologetically calming; it’s the kind of place where you can settle in and truly hear the soft velvet of perfect vocals from artists like Jonny Hartman, Ella and more...

If you’re looking to escape the noise and remember why you fell in love with music in the first place, Mohan has built the perfect sanctuary for it at @thegrooveroom.music taken in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia by @records.athome

Kenny is the kind of guy who would rather do things…quietly and well…

ā€œQuiet Kennyā€ could be considered 45 minutes of silence… Then too, some might think its an indication that Kenny Dorham speaks softly; and again, there are those who might think that ā€œQuiet Kenny means that this entire album is composed of ballads…. taken in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia by @records.athome

A gentle knock and we stepped into an intimate oasis, a wood-paneled room decorated with bottles of liquor and records…

A seated couples faced two enormous speakers with prayerful attention…A turntable spun, The bell-like chime of a vibraphone, the reedy huff of a saxophone, and the delicate patter of drums radiated through the room. The only other sounds were the cups and an occasional whispers..

A smiling bartender seated us, offering a menu that came with instructions: ā€œWe ask that you speak in a low voice in our store.ā€

He cued up Stan Getz & Gilberto When ā€œThe Girl From Ipanemaā€ came on, it was as realistic and clear as the concert must have sounded in the days… taken in Osaka, Japan by @records.athome
