Check out our in-depth interviews today with musicians Sal Mastrocola (Gatto Black), Jordan Smith (Stress Dolls, Personal Style, and Urge Surfer) and Vinnie Lema (Pretty Good State University and Girl Stuf) as well as our ‘Soundbites’ roundup of music news from across the Buffalo scene. See it all at 1120press.com - Link to our online magazine in our bio linktr.ee

Yes, we’re back. We’re not exactly the same, but we’re back. We took a few months to think and retool. We’ll be publishing 4-story issues once a month. They will include long-form profile interviews with original, individual Buffalo artists. We’ll also be doing occasional editorial and enterprise pieces.

One difference which may upset some is we won’t be doing reviews. The reasons for that are many and if you want to take me out for coffee or a few beers, I’ll be more than happy to explain the many reasons why. Or, message if you’re curious. We will, however, carry over our Soundbites column which rounds up new music and other items of interest from throughout the Buffalo scene. Soundbites will run as part of our monthly issues when warranted, and periodically as stand-alone pieces, as well.

1120 Press is a one-man operation. With the many other projects in which I’m involved, time needs to be used wisely. Duplicating what others are doing in this space - and doing well - doesn’t make sense. My time is better spent doing what I do best, which is long-form journalism. If that’s not your thing, I totally understand. Taste is subjective. For example, millions of people (for some reason) like The Eagles. I hate them.

Besides publishing, we’ll continue boosting the scene in other ways, including shooting shows, promoting performances on 1120 YouTube and TikTok, and supporting artists through 1120 Records. Also, stay tuned for our second documentary film now in production in collaboration with Shepherd Moon Studios, coming in the first half of 2027.

Best,
Matt

AGM-004* - Camp Club by Urge Surfer

Hands down one of my favorite weekends this summer. It’s not something we all don’t know, but away from the apps and hamster wheels of life there’s solace in creation. The state of creating makes me feel at home in a way that very few things do. Here’s a snapshot of some of that dynamic at play.

* I was saying that this release was catalogue number AGM-003, but then I realized that it already existed… just isn’t out yet. More info soon. by @rectangular_eye

I want to tell you a story. @what_valerie_makes has long loved @sarabareilles. Unrelated, Val's mom passed away in May. Sara's new record is all about moving through various forms of grief. The timeline seems mildly spooky. When Sara's tour was announced, we paid $800 for middle of the road tickets to see her at @masseyhall (a mind-meltingly insane price for this hardcore kid). On Friday, Val broke her ankle while helping me load in for a gig in Syracuse. The following day I inquired about accessibility at Massey, knowing that Val would need wheelchair accommodations. They offered to downgrade our seats, but they would now be wheelchair accessible, though there will be a visual obstruction - great, a compromise. We arrive. The ushers inform us that this new spot will not work. We wait for a solution. We are downgraded again to a floor up. We are ushered outside to a backdoor and into another elevator. Now Val has a wheelchair parking spot, with the twin caveat that there is a more prominent visual obstruction and I don't have a seat. The ushers ask the people seated next to Val if they will move so I can sit - their new seats will be better if they move anyway. They move. I sit. I am very uncomfortable with these circumstances. The show begins and neither of us are emotionally present. The show ends, we leave in silence, seething. We blame ourselves for how things played out - Val's injury, my inquisitiveness. Obviously, this is our fault. by @rectangular_eye

Personal Style / Chimes of Bayonets 2026 Canadian Tour has come to a close. I needed that more than I knew. I think I could happily move to Montréal. Love the @chimesofbayonets crew to death. Shout-out to @stephenpercent for driving the entire time while I laid in the back reading and napping. Had drinks with @millimetricinstruments and his lovely partner. Met @basementlyle and his daughter in person for the first time after years of chatting about gear online. Saw @hidden_mountain_horizon for the first time in years. It's impossible to convey what it's like to go on the road, embracing the chaos of the unknown that comes with each day, playing music for strangers to those that have never done it, but it's certainly among my very favorite things. No idea what the future holds for Personal Style, but I can't imagine not making music with these fine folks in the future. by @rectangular_eye

Last weekend we had what we had dubbed Urge Summer Camp, a three day writing retreat in the woods of Western New York. We wrote and recorded two new songs and rather than sit on them, we decided to release them asap. They'll be waiting for you on August 31st on all major platforms. Welcome to Camp Club. by @rectangular_eye

This book steamrolled me. I have never encountered a work of fiction that conveys with such accuracy and dark humor the time period in which a person admits to themselves that they are in fact trans and actually have to take some kind of action to address it, and how this metamorphosis plays out as their secret begins to spill out into the world. It also confronts so many of the same fears many of us struggle with - what will happen to my marriage, my job, my friendships if I unveil this monumentally embarrassing thing about myself? And it does so while exploring the beauty of female friendships and found family with so much sweetness and wit. Loved it. Laughed so much. Cried a bunch.

While nearing the end, I went back and looked at some photos from those early days which aren't even that long ago in the grand scheme of things. 4.5 years ago I realized I had to grapple with my own transness. Looking at myself in the mirror at that time, I struggled to see how I might exist on the other side of this admission (pic #2). I found folks online whose own journey saw them physically and spiritually transform within a few years and reached out to talk (you know who you are - so grateful to you!). I used AI and a photo of myself to guestimate what I might look like as a woman (#3 - surprisingly helpful and relatively accurate). But ultimately, I just had to trust that my body would make good use of the medication that promised to alleviate this life long sense of bodily disconnection.

Last week, something I did not anticipate happened. I was invited by a dear friend to attend an event at which I could get a bit dressed up. We traveled, so I didn't wear makeup other than mascara and I just let my hair air dry after a shower. I very much looked like me, and went about the evening drinking free cocktails and chatting with folks I didn't know. The next day this photo (#4) appeared on the Getty website, along with many others from the event. 4.5 years ago, I never could have imagined that this person in this photo would in fact be me. I don't know how you feel about it, but I feel pretty fucking proud.

Whirlwind trip to NYC to play wing-woman to @stressdolls and hang at grammies HQ™ for @rampd_up. Made a pit stop in Poughkeepsie to hang with Brad and Linz, and got to see @theythemfemme for the first time in 15 years! Meanwhile back at home, someone tried to steal @what_valerie_makes and I's lease, again. by @rectangular_eye
