In a week marred by grief for the arts community and the Beard Street Warehouse and the advancement of Brooklyn Marine Terminal plans, Red Hook still finds a way to send timely, seafaring reminders that our tide pool is not only fed by the waterfront and its history — but also by the people who call it home now.

The note, found at the Pier 44 Waterfront Garden, reads: “Tide pool habitats are sanctuaries for especially adaptable animals like anemones, barnacles, crustaceans, mussels, sea stars, snails, urchins as well as sea weed.

“Inhabitants must be able to cope with constantly changing water levels, water temperatures, salinity, and oxygen content. At low tide, there is the risk of of predators like seabirds.”

This message is followed by a quote from John Steinbeck’s The Log from the Sea of Cortez: “It is advisable to look from the tide pool to the stars and then back to the tide pool.”
