✨ART EXHIBIT ✨

Come to @duckworthgallery on November 6th to view the fundraising exhibit, which will then continue to run online for a month, supporting two vital causes:

@friendsoffirefighters — a nonprofit providing free mental health and wellness services to the FDNY community since 2001.

@hotwoodarts — A community of 20 resident artists with art studios, a music studio, a gallery, and a
performance space that was recently devastated by the September 17-18 fire in Red Hook, Brooklyn.

The show will include paintings, photographs, sculptures, and works on paper. Go to the gallery’s website for more info:

GoFundMe to Help Megan Rebuild Hot Wood:

My dear friend @megansuttlesartist just lost her beloved @hotwoodarts and all of her art as did all 20 Hot Wood Resident Artists. Please donate (link in bio) to help her rebuild Hot Wood!

Megan built Hot Wood Arts from scratch 13 years ago in an 1860s warehouse in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Hot Wood had 17 resident artist studios (including Megan’s) and 20 resident artists, a gallery and a performance space but it was much more than that. It was a vibrant community space where people came together to collaborate on a project, perform a concert, enjoy a show, build lasting friendships and spend time with like-minded people. Megan fostered a caring community at Hot Wood, something that is invaluable in these times.

Just last week, Megan hosted a phenomenal opening for a show by artist Simona Prives with sound art and music by Kyle Luntz and Ryan Vahey. Musicians David Nagler (As For the Future) and The Tall Pines performed sets of their fantastic original music. The opening was a memorable night of art and music, and community, something that occurred regularly at Hot Wood.

Tragically, on September 17th, a fire destroyed Hot Wood Arts and all of the art within it. Megan puts so much energy into uplifting other people’s art and other people in general. Let’s come together and help her rebuild Hot Wood, cover the temporary loss of income, and show her that her community is here to help her rebuild.
Photos/video of fire taken by Megan the other night. Other photos I pulled from@Hot Wood’s instagram.

Homage to Gabriel and Rudy Frank, WWII merchant marine veterans and dear friends… ✨

“I remember me and my brother Gabe in the lower east side on Henry street in the early thirties, 1929. We were living in a cold-water flat. I remember the bathtub in the kitchen and a bathroom out in the hallway, always, it was a mess. We used to go down to the river, me and Gabe, a lot. There was a lot of horse and wagons in those days and I’d always be under the horse and wagons, so would Gabe. We would always be down by the waterfront, and my mother, may she rest in peace, she used to holler for us all the time and then…that’s as much as I can remember of my childhood. We used to go into the river, playing around the river. The years went by. And then this terrible incident, she tried to do away with a child that she had, because of the terrible conditions that existed then, it was the depression era and, unfortunately, by trying to do away with the child because she could not keep up with the poverty that we were living in, tragedy ensued. She lost a lot of blood, they rushed her to the hospital, and I think she passed away a day or two later—poor woman. I think she was in her late thirties. My brother always says a prayer for her every year…he never forgot her. Gabe, he’s a wonderful guy.

We were raised in an orphanage for a few years, and then with the Jewish foster home bureau we went to a lot of homes…Years went by… my brother went to the U.S. maritime training school in Sheepshead Bay. I went into the merchant marine shortly after. I didn’t go to the training center. I got a letter to the coast guard saying that a steamship company would employ me, and because of that I was able to secure seamen’s papers to go to sea, at the age of sixteen. My brother joined when he was seventeen; we joined a few moths apart…my brother spent 23 years at sea. You could say the rest is history. That sums it up…”

Local Heroes: The Participants of the Annual Red Hook Barnacle Parade @redhookbarnacles

Not even the rain could stop the good folks of Red Hook from showing up with spectacularly creative, fun costumes and floats for the annual Barnacle Parade. The parade is a celebration of Red Hook’s resiliency in the face of the destructive effects of Superstorm Sandy. The 2012 storm decimated homes, cars, and businesses.

The parade featured a giant disco-themed rollerskate with a live DJ in its toebox, a feral cat riding on a fish, and various water- and nonwater-themed costumes. Follow them! @redhookbarnacle
