Independent- so much beauty! Its exhibition-style fair masterfully continued and elevated. Brian P. 11 images from David Hockney’s small book illustrating ‘Six Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm’ re-reading in his honor. Published in 1970. Hockney created 39 hand drawn etchings, for stories he found the most imaginative and obscure, including: ‘The Little Sea Hare’, ‘Fundevogel’, ‘Rapunzel’, ‘The Boy who left Home to learn Fear’, ‘Old Rinkrank’ and ‘Rumpelstilzchen’. What a wonderful life.

Jack Shainman Gallery “Modus Operandi” at The School in Kinderhook, NY. Blessedly nothing is simplistic or overtly political, new and important historical works by 19 artists poetically capture the darknesss and dystopia of our time, and the past, in this thoughtfully curated exhibition. Enjoy this interview with Leandro Erlich for Sculpture about his latest public artwork, Concrete Coral, 22 concrete cars forming a new reef in South Beach, Miami. Typically, sunken cars would signify tragedy, and while I was scuba diving to the artwork in a weighted vest the mafia sayings “wearing cement shoes” and “sleeping with the fishes” did come to mind. But rather than conjuring dystopia, this project reveals itself as a meditation on renewal, regeneration, and hope.
In a highly unusual artistic approach, Erlich considers his sculpture to be a success only once it loses its shape by surrendering to nature. And it’s well on its way -already subsumed by planted coral and serving as a refuge and kitchen for a magnificent array of sea life. *Carrie Schneider rippling photograph sourced from the film “La Jetée” forms a free-standing seductive sculpture @davidpeterfrancis
*Jane Bustin minimalist panels are combined with found imagery in the beautifully titled And So She Forgets @janelombardgallery

*Rei Kawakubo / Comme Des Garcons what does it say about the artworld that a crowd favorite of over 75 art booths at Independent was the fashion installation. But damn those boundary pushing sort-of-wearable creations are art! And it complimented rather than detracted - though construction environment seemed a bit heavy handed.

Mythology and folklore filtered through a contemporary lens toward the absurd was on view in many works at NADA, and I particularly fell for Ninko Morbedadze’s (Tbilisi, Georgia) delicate colored pencil and ink drawings. Ornamental patterns, floral wallpaper, and idyllic landscapes set the background for the human / insect scaled creations. @ch64gallery @newartdealers taken in NADA by @redartprojects
