On Sept. 17 and 18, 2025, a five-alarm fire tore through a warehouse on 481 Van Brunt St. in one of Red Hook’s worst disasters since Superstorm Sandy.

In the months after the fire, the Star-Revue interviewed several artists about the recovery, grief, and their future as artists.

A year later, as the anniversary came and went, we followed up with three of them: Justin Neely, Smith Banfield, and Bettina Magi. Read about how they recovered and found their way back to their art, via the link in our bio.

Two people, a 25-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man, were shot on Sunday night opposite the Amazon Fulfillment Center on 55 By St. They are both in stable condition.

At 11:15 p.m., police from the 76th Precinct responded to a 911 call of two people shot, the woman in the chest and the man in the shoulder.

According to the NYPD, the two suspected shooters, who fled in a white sedan (a Nissan Altima, News12 Brooklyn reports), have yet to be identified, and the investigation is ongoing.

Red Hook has a new diner: Val’s, started by Victoria Viscusi, Allie Gassaway, and Laine Pelka. The restautant just opened, and is already drawing rave reviews in a diner-starved neigborhood.

The trio hopes that Val’s will not only be an affordable breakfast and lunch option for Red Hook, but also a much-needed gathering spot or even a “living room” for the community.

Read Alice Feigel’s interview with Val’s founders, whose first initials create the name of the diner (although it’s also a nod to Valentino Park), via the link in our bio.

Concrete may not be sexy, but it’s all over New York City. And now, for the first time, can concrete be manufactured within the five boroughs, after the New York State Department of Transportation gave approval to marine precast concrete manufacturer Ionic Order.

Ionic Order is the Brooklyn Marine Termina’s newest tenant, and the waterfront access will allow the company to use barges and short-haul delivery to move its products.

Today, a year ago, 25 members of the Brooklyn Marine Terminal Task Force gathered alongside staff of the New York City Economic Development Corporation (EDC) to vote on the vision plan that was to guide the redevelopment of the waterfront site.

Huddled inside an office building at the Brooklyn Marine Terminal (BMT), the task force approved the vision plan with a narrow two-thirds majority (which was required to advance the plan) during a tense meeting that included several heated exchanges.

Since then, the planning has progressed slowly. A Brooklyn Marine Terminal Development Corporation (BMTDC) has been formed to shepherd the project from vision to reality, the environmental review is ongoing, a lawsuit has been filed and denied, and repair work has begun on Pier 10 to allow for the installation of a new crane.

Here is a rundown of everything of note that’s happened since the vote that fateful September day.

Most people would trust a valet to park their car at a hotel or a restaurant. But would you trust a driver you don’t know to park your car on the streets of New York City? What if it meant avoiding an alternate side parking ticket?

Rishi Ganesh hopes that you will. He’s the founder of Valet Network, a new service that’s aiming to give every frustrated New York driver their own on-demand valet.

Read what happened when William Antonelli tried Valet Network via the link in our bio.
