Artist working primarily in glass. I take a modular approach to casting, inspired by the underlying structure of nature.

A rare video with my voice (eugh...🤢).

Yes, it might seem a little obsessive to take this much care for a reservoir, but it'll be useful for other moulds (my modular edge length stays the same). It's also nice and low lying (important in some kilns).

Why not build it in? Because I don't often need the extra space - so it'd be a waste of materials. by @redpathglass

Freshly demoulded / divested this morning:

Outies - the pentagonal pyramid version. Here the modules splay out, rather than being upright as they are in the hexagonal version). A whole colony of these would be good...

The last time I cast this family of form was in 2013 before I'd started my modular obsession! I made a full cardboard model (all "limbs" the same height) and then went through the lost wax process.

Making them with the modules seems like closing a circle. And the different module heights help lend a sense of movement - it could be great to try accentuating that with a hotshop pick-up. 🤔 by @redpathglass

This evening's job was demoulding these three casts. Not too bad. As suspected, the one done with unfused sheet glass has some issues (the glass didn't fill all six of the smallest triangles) - but the patterning is interesting, so it'll be worth experimenting further (with a fuse firing first...). by @redpathglass

No, I'm not making banana custard lollipops (though my food-centric brain is now considering that!) I'm actually making a set of triangular silicone modules - three heights of both clockwise and anti-clockwise spirals.

When I first came up with this modular system (back in 2016 😮), the modules were made using layered mount board (matt board) models / moulds. These 3D printed versions certainly increase accuracy (though I forgot the second stabilising nut on the first attempt - which didn't!) by @redpathglass

Removing the modular silicone and cardboard from yesterday's refractory plaster mould. The fiddly bit is undoing the wing nuts

The hollow cardboard model which holds the modules in the desired 3D shape is one use only: it has to be ripped away (or the machine screws would foul). But it can at least be recycled, as I use paper tape to stick the net together. by @redpathglass

It's been a while since I've posted, so here's a little time lapse of a mould being made. I'll try and remember to post the peel and reveal tomorrow (or rather the pull and reveal in this case!) by @redpathglass

"Drawn to the Light" photos taken by @simon_bruntnell_photographer yesterday. This piece will be on show/for sale in the Fifteen X Fifteen exhibition @blowfish_gallery. (For details, see the bottom - or check their account directly)

I find it fascinating that slicing, mirroring and rotating standard pursuit curve spirals gives rise to forms that speak of the natural world. I see moths (hence the title) but orchids, bat faces and other things have been mentioned.

The almost metallic effect is down to the original 3D printed surface, the combination of layered colours (the tall one has 4 plus clear, the short 3 plus clear), the firing schedule and I think also the glass format that touches the mould. No mirroring - though it might be nice to give that a try.

Exhibition details:
Fifteen x Fifteen 2026 at Blowfish Gallery, Unit 15, Red House Glass Cone, High St, Wordsley, Stourbridge, DY8 4AZ
Opening event: Saturday 22 August from 11am - ticketed demonstrations taking place during the day
Exhibition open to the public: 2 September - 22 October
Online Exhibition open until 22 November by @redpathglass

Chuffed to have these three 'Deep Hex' pieces selected for a @contemporaryglasssociety exhibition at @theworldofglasssthelens. I've already spotted some other stunning selected pieces which will be there too.

I'm hoping I can make the opening event at lunchtime on Saturday 14th March. Holler if you'd like me to send you an invite.

Finally made a start.

I've been putting off coldworking the other four panels that complete my colour study for far too long. It's partly because they need to be hand lapped, as my little 20cm flat lap isn't big enough for the grinding or smoothing (though with a little care I can use it for the polish).

If you've ever wondered about my more sculptural modular systems (the "outies"), I'll be sharing this approach @theglassunderground_nj in New Jersey this October. A couple of spaces have opened up on the first session. Head over to their website to find out more (Unfortunately IG won't let me add a link to my bio at the mo - but their profile has a link to the website, and the info is in Visiting Artists under the Workshops tab!) by @redpathglass

Small works which come to life in your hand - portable joy; wonder as an everyday carry.* I might actually be getting somewhere...what do you think?

*I'm not a survivalist...I just need a reminder list on my front door, and Francis (bf) calls it my EDC. by @redpathglass
