🔋 A PSYCHO BODEGA FEVER DREAM for the baddest of baddies, @nuxx.worldwide 🔋

A few weeks ago, I’d just moved in the middle of a heatwave, I was dealing with the tail end of some heinous life shit, and I felt completely drained of creative juices… until Maddy hit me up about some new stage visuals for her tour in support of legendary facemelters @spike.hellis, and suddenly the batteries started charging again 😎

Comprised of hand-animated analog frames (as seen in slide 9), plus heavily-processed VHS footage shot by myself and @necro.mantis a few years back at the @leatherboundbooking gig where we first met Nuxx… we love a plunge into the archives.

I just spent a month living inside the strange organic architecture I’d started making in 2023 for the performances of @madelinegoldstein_ and emerged with THIS: a new synced set of animated stage visuals, cut into 13 vignettes for each of Madeline’s live songs on the (ongoing) SPEAKING TO THE BODY release tour 🗣️🫀❗️

I jumped at the chance to arrange the visual themes as I’d imagined them when I made the original loop. Conceived as an homage to animator Eichii Yamamoto, but swapping his still watercolor panels for VHS footage (shot by @necro.mantis and I) of textures and materials to form the semi-organic, pulsing, flashing “walls” of the spaces, with hand-drawn animation frames on top. This time the palette is a modern red and blue, with ecstatic breaks flashing through as symbols travel through a bizarre psychic body (with visual references and techniques lifted from Saul & Elaine Bass animation, Bakshi films, late 60’s anime, Maurice Binder 007 titles, and Fosse nightclub lighting).

I also integrated the work of some of Madeline’s other collaborators, working with design assets from @michaelbuhlerrose and photos from @lonelyrodeostar, @chakravorty, @melindamayyy, and Julia Villalobos (plus assets from Madeline’s own prior visuals).

The music has a warmth and honesty that makes it comfortable to inhabit, even through the tedium and mental blocks of animation. I had ideas that didn’t make it into the original cut, so I dove in after my first listen to the LP and let an abstract narrative develop as I worked.

Madeline holds down a critical (and often-overlooked) corner of modern music where the thoughtful, mature, “soften-up-and-feel-it” vibes reside. It’s a tall order to support that degree of onstage rizz, but I feel like this new sharpened version of the visuals manages to take you on a proper journey through Madeline’s subtly-provocative takes on the “body” of body music: the body as our only vessel for true experiences, and as the organic site of our dreams 🗣️🧠❓

I AM V PROUD to have made these (and a set of animated stage visuals!) for new wave legends @wangchungofficial for the 40th anniversary of TO LIVE AND DIE IN LA! Shows in LA (@belascola 12/3) and SF (@guildtheatre 12/4)…

I was a dyed-in-the-wool student of pulp and neo-noir as a lil art nerd, and I cannot thank @briantarney and @restlessnites enough for hooking me up with this opportunity to reimagine these scenes with hand animation. No AI… just ~30 old-fashioned hand-drawn/hand-scanned black marker frames per scene and a lot of fx 🛠️ (plus some fun movie cuts!)
