year of the artist: time and intuition 🕰️💌

when people say art is life, i understand that to mean that art is meant to be lived through. and in that vein, this piece has been in the works for almost a year. it comes from being determined to really sit and ponder over my ideals, question them, critique them, discover new ones and most importantly, live out those ideals to test their durability in real life. what the people need more than anything are philosophies that actually add value to their everyday.

deconstructing the colonial and imperial view of time,and relearning about indigenous ways of living like presence and intuition have been two crucial philosophies of my everyday life since.
i see them as both influential to my practice, but also imperative for revolution and everyday acts of resistance.

today, i share another time capsule of the revolution’s prelude from my perspective. i do this to archive the revolution before and as it occurs. there are definitely other workers doing their part too, but this, is simply mine.

year of the artist, part one. 🎨

this is an extract from one of my favourite artworks to date - “the year of the artist, part one”.
it’s a chronicle of my entire “first” year as an artist.
i say first like that because upon reflection it’s the year i acknowledged the deep knowing i’ve always had that i was an artist.
but in an age where art fights for attention amongst content creation, i decided to go against the grain with something that was authentic to me but also authentic to the art form of documentation.

a video from @bennettcoast inspired me to be okay with what i’m coining as “slow art”. art that forces you to be enveloped it it, not consume it. narratives that my audience - lovers of this age - will relate to. so it only made sense to only use music i believed in from my friends and fellow artists who loved their art. (thank you @joctaves_ , @nolais.o and @jaydottcee ).

and it made even more sense for this video piece to be narrated by my friends, my support system on this journey exploring the textures of humanity and love.

creative block 💌

honestly, i’ve tended to sidestep this question when asked in the past. i’ve never experienced creative block, but i’ve always understood that this wasn’t because i was “more gifted” than others or something.
so after interrogating this, i realised it was more so about how i’ve always seen creativity. i’ve never seen it as my own. instead, i am just stewarding this truth within me that wishes to speak (like all of us do).

why is this relevant? because it means i’ve relinquished control of what i want to say or what i NEED to say.
if i see myself as a vessel then i’m not pressuring myself to have to say anything. i’m trusting my intuition and the first ideas more and mkre, just like a child would.
so instead of creativity being “how do i get the tap to run water?”, my question is always “where can i find the leak?” (because there will always be one).
this changes our approach from working against our gifts, to working alongside them.

year of the artist: slowness. 💌

the world wants you numb. this, is an interruption. an anti-content interruption.

“enjoying the slowness of life” is a phrase i am aligning with more and more as i become increasingly disillusioned with capitalism. i have begun to explore the nature of our ancestors’ affinity with nature and its ability to centre us.

in other words, exploring the fact that nature is slow (and have meaning), whilst human creation (particularly capitalism), has tended to be fast and optimal, creating an internal dichotomy. are we just meant to be productive or meaningful?

so this is another time capsule into how my non conventional life path rubs against the system’s desire to make me feel late to life achievements, laboured at the pace of the city and bored with the cycle of work-eat-sleep-repeat.

i want to help build a love movement of the ages. to align with the disillusioned and those who find themselves at the periphery.

join me in finding the love and intention within the world.
