True story: went to class a few days after a friend and I had been lamenting together about things ending with someone who gave many signs that it would be a life-long love.

Honestly, this has happened to too many of my friends and I can’t really explain how angry it makes me. The choreo and this song made me tell her story.

A “dance track” is a loose term for a role in a musical that is dance heavy and requires advanced dance skill. “The Fates” are characters in Hadestown The Musical. More of the story below.

I think Hadestown has one of the most exciting jazz scores we’ve seen in modern musicals and as a jazz choreographer - this excites me to no end.

The Fates are a trio that delivers a powerful vocal performance in this show. Listening to this song, I had the thought, “what if the fates were a dance track?”

The music in this song (and the whole musical) is insanely layered - it’s a playground for a jazz dancer.

I wanted to create choreo that communicated their power, their apathy, and their drama. Choreo that personified the music but still communicated with the body what is being said with the mouth.

And while I personally disagree with the sentiment of the words, I understand the role they play in communicating the wrestle with our humanity and the struggles of the oppressed.

Grateful for these dancers. Grateful for the privilege to be part of the age old love story between music and dance.

A cabaret moment sharing the story of a wife who thinks her husband has died in war - I’ll Forget You from The Scarlet Pimpernel.

I let the emotion take over me in the end and lost some vocal control but I’m okay with that - to be flawed is to be human 🫶🏻

Big thank you to my vocal coach and dear friend @londonsongbird, without whom this moment would never have happened.
