Getting through the entire melody of Don Byas over Stardust. Byas’s virtuosity is always humbling when transcribing him - his lines have such fluidity in the most effortless ways. Getting these timbres to match with alternate fingerings is no joke! I love transcribing tenor players on alto because it really makes me focus on getting my sound together in the middle and lower registers. This track is from a complete Charlie Christian compilation 🎷

Hi everyone. Still learning how to play melodies, and this version of Stardust by Don Byas brings me a lot of joy. Getting all of his nuances, timbres, and articulations correct is much more difficult than it appears, not to mention trying to capture his beauty in the lower part of the alto. 2nd half coming soon 🎷

Lee Konitz 🎷over “My Melancholy Baby” from the album Together Again with Bill Evans 🎹 Nils Henning Orsted Pedersen 🎻 and Alan Dawson 🥁 (1965).

This period of Lee is interesting to me because it feels transitional. He’s clearly on his way to embracing the more “simple” and spontaneous vocabulary he used in the latter half of his life, but there are still clear traces of both line and motivic development from his Tristano days in there. It seemed he was touring Europe with this group quite a bit around this time, so to me he sounds comfortable and is taking more risks than normal. Lee usually played this tune in Bb, and so I’m guessing the recording got slightly sped up. But I had fun learning this melody and solo in B; it feels good to get this familiar vocabulary in a different part of the horn right off the bat rather than learning first and then transposing. Not to mention trying to capture the right timbre via alternate fingerings that I wouldn’t normally use.
