It was only one set. And it definitely wasn’t enough. I really wanted to hear more from this quartet tonight but after a two hour documentary at @filmforumnyc on the struggles of indigenous people in Argentina and one set at @smallslive, it was time to head back to Shaolin—Lennie was waiting for dinner and a walk. Somehow, AlexLoRe and Marta Sánchez put together a group to read through very challenging original compositions by both of them, as well as from Monk, Geri Allen, and a gorgeous rendition of These Foolish Things, in a way that captivated the audience. Every solo was applauded. There wasn’t any of the usual talking louder than the music! It was the second time this week I saw Marta Sánchez play—elegantly and powerfully. Her latest album “For The Space You Left” is terrific—it made me feel like I was in a dream sequence in an Almodóvar film. Alex’s saxophone work was inventive and exquisite. Rashaan Carter’s bass work was vibrant and nourishing, and Tim Angulo was dynamic in all ways on drums as usual. I am sorry I couldn’t stay for the second set. I’m confident that the band was on fire.

I had a wonderful time giving a clinic for Conn Selmer at Pm Woodwind’s Saxophone Pro Day in Evanston! Thanks to everyone for coming out to the event! I also had the chance to try out a bunch of beautiful alto saxophones, which I usually never do. Here’s the order of each video: 1. Supreme 2. Signature 3. 143,000 series Mark VI, 4. 231,000 series Mark IV, 5. Connfirmation. What do you think? My favorite was the confirmation!
