Andrea V. Wright explores liminality through sculptural assemblages where body and mind, fullness and emptiness are celebrated through found objects and discarded fragments brought into dialogue with raw industrial materials. Informed by fashion, music culture, and tactile processes of draping, wrapping, and tension, her work examines thresholds between control and vulnerability, structure and gesture, presence and absence. Hybrid forms emerge — both architectural and corporeal — suspended in states of transformation where meaning remains deliberately open.

Site specific work created at the Tate & Lyle Factory, Silvertown.

This work is a direct cast imprint of the walls of the factory. Whilst on the scaffold during the work I thought “who built these walls and has anyone been in such intimate contact with this surface but me since then?”. There’s an element to creating to the work that is labour intensive and repetitive - my movements shadowing what has gone before. I almost felt that as I was painting I was tracing their imprint of all who had occupied this space as much as the wall’s. Perhaps that is where the other dimension lies - in the disappearing of time.
I have used latex in much of my work both in the studio and in site-specific residencies for a number of years introduced through the works of Robert Overby & Heidi Bucher. Its skin-like quality and ability to trace the contours of a surface producing an accreted imprint with phenomenological resonance — only to disintegrate itself — latex is perishable and unstable. It is a complex material that requires repetition in the ritual of making but perhaps thats why I’m drawn to it.

Bird of Prey - In Service to Shadows

Using a single light source I traced the shadows from a 3D steel-line sculpture that was hanging on my studio wall onto card to create a flattened ‘shadow drawing’, which I then cut-out and remounted, bending it slightly to create an arc in the card and finally lit it to create further shadows. The continuity of the line is maintained throughout its transformation, alluding to fundamental aspects of both drawing and sculpture, simultaneously inhabiting different worlds, belonging to both and neither.’
