Introducing Andrea V Wright @andreavwright to Pink Noise

“Materiality is at the heart of my practice, which utilises found objects, hoarded scraps and fly-tipped detritus alongside raw materials such as latex, steel and wood. I have a background of working with fashion stylists and designers, which feeds into my work through the use of drapery, tactile manipulation and illusion.
The seen and the unseen, the experienced and the intangible are my building blocks, presenting a vertical stage onto which hand crafted or industrially manufactured materials are wrapped, pinned and draped. The formal language inherent in my work contrasts with the handmade gestural qualities that bring a human, haptic quality to it, reflecting the
relationship between the body, environment and the physical/emotional space we inhabit. There are multiple voices at play in my work that are yearning to be heard, often expressed in tensions, contradictions and dualities through the assemblage of the materials I employ.

We are delighted to share some images of ‘Precarious Conditions of Uncertainty’, our current exhibition of new and recent work @andreavwright teetering on the peripheries of sculpture and painting #5howickplace @hs_projects

Transformation has always been an important component in Andrea V. Wright’s practice, through materials or methodology. Utilising geometric and organic structural references, her work employs a hybrid of controlled elements: highly finished clean lines, spatial arrangements and compositions.

The contrasting materials (leather, latex, fabric, rubber) paired or arranged with structures, are often a record of surfaces, of moments in time where works are developed within the specific site context. These elements are woven into her practice suggesting a veiled architecture that reflects the body’s structure and stance. Rigid substrates of wood and steel contrast against the soft supple weight of powdered latex rubber, pointing to the ways that we drape our own bodies in an attempt to disguise what lies within.

There is something about those in-between stages, which point to between becoming and disintegrating, that Wright’s work captures, giving it tension and power. Her materials are both subtly figurative and architectural: structure and surface, bone and skin. Treading a threshold that can be incredibly difficult to articulate, visualise or give form to, for Wright, these dynamic shifts in tension are as much a metaphysical journey, a play on the imagination, as something that is physical and present.

I am so pleased to be exhibiting my work Laplace (2018) as part of SURFACE online curated by David Cass for Projectroom2020 Link in bio.

‘I definitely felt the presence of history and time whilst making this piece. The erosion of the wall, the green algae growing in the corner, the rusted nails, all had to be taken into consideration - I had to think how I would undercut these features so that the latex would peel well. It’s a risk, as you never know what you are going to get, as so little is visible till the end till the end. It disappears during the making.
A Laplace Transform is a mathematical description of the process that a system performs over time. Throughout the process of installation, the layering of the material upon the wall mimicked the rhythm of the brick structure itself and I became part of the system. Whilst on the scaffold during the work I thought “who built these walls and has anyone been in such intimate contact with this surface but me since then?”. There’s an element to creating to the work that is labour intensive and repetitive - my movements shadowing what has gone before. I almost felt that as I was painting I was tracing their imprint as much as the wall’s. Perhaps that is where the other dimension lies - in the disappearing of time.
I have used latex in much of my work both in the studio and in site-specific residencies for a number of years introduced and influenced through the works of Eva Hesse, Robert Overby and Heidi Bucher’.

@andreavwright’s practice interweaves stable and fragile compositions through fabrication, transformation and re-invention. For example, geometric structures act as substrates for skin-like surface residues, or provide a starting point for temporal spatial drawing installations, where the shadows of these structures are traced onto architectural spaces using tape and threads. Key to all her works is the relationship between the human form and the physical/emotional spaces which we inhabit.
