Ayanfe Olarinde is intuitive and clear about what is authentic to her. Olarinde depicts change as uncomfortable but promises happiness on the other side. Happiness, in this context, is approached from the perspective of growth and transformation: joy is not immediately evident but is implied as the necessary aftermath. Happy continues. Clay making piqued my interest earlier this year. After spending some time painting on ready-made bisque clay sculptures and glazing them into beautiful ceramic art pieces at my favorite spot in Lagos, I decided to dive deeper by learning the art itself. In February, I took a trip to Delta to learn about ceramics, and honestly, there’s so much I’d like to show you (I’ll do a separate post on it). But in the meantime, here’s a video of me harnessing the skill I’ve learned. I had the privilege to showcase as part of the special projects at the 14th edition of the Dakar Biennale @biennale_de_dakar_officiel @maisondelaculturedoutaseck “The Igbo Rising” Inspired by the Igbo landing occurrence in May, 1803. A number of Igbos revolted at a historical site Dunbar creek on St. Simons Island, in Georgia, rather than submit to an existence of bondage and forced labor at the hands of another; slavery. Igbo people were popularly known by farmers and slavers of the American South for being fiercely independent, hardworking and more unwilling to tolerate chattel slavery. They were moved from Nigeria for forced labor on their plantation in St. Simons Island. During this voyage, the Igbos revolted by drowning their captors and taking over the ship, causing it to drown at the site now known as the “Ebo Landing”. They would rather be free spirits, than enslaved bodies. It was said that the Igbos took to the swamp, chained together, led by a chief priest amongst them as they drowned themselves, singing “Orimiri omambala bu anyi bia, orimiri omambala ka anyi ga ejina” in unison, which means “The Omambala River brought us here, the Omambala River will take us home” ‘home’ being a metaphor for freedom, not only from their captors, but from flesh which made it possible in the first place for them to captured and chained, in joyful anticipation of another cycle of reincarnation. My subjects (the igbos) are seen to be emerging from the water— breaking free. They’re seen rising as the sun rises into a new day. I perceive this historical event as a tragic yet courageous one, re-imagining the ocean as a place of beauty, strength, bravery, of rebirth and where the Igbos resisted enslavement, rose in rebellion and fought for their freedom. This event isn’t seen as death nor a case of surrender but an awakening. It is amongst the first instance of Black Resistance against enslavement. . The feeling of returning to a place where you truly belong—whether it’s a physical space, a mental construct or to a group of people. It’s a moment of reconnection, where the familiar comforts of the past meet the person you’ve become, creating a sense of warmth, acceptance, and renewal. It’s not only about coming back or reconnecting, but about rediscovering the meaning of “home” in a deeper, more personal way. I created “Omode Meta” by breaking down components of past creations to forge a new piece. Building this piece helped me reconnect with ‘Home’ which is my inner child whom I’d been longing to rediscover and explore. I called this journey “My Homecoming” One off my ‘Let The Kid Paint’ series. Ofcourse I had to go through that journey within using collages of paper planes I had painted in the past 🙂‍↔️ Original bits of this painting was made traditionally using Ink, acrylic, oil pastel and wool. Day 9- Residency in Côte d’Ivoire. I’ve been enjoying and paying attention to the activities by the beach and in the village. I’ve picked interest in journey and passersby on the beach and its environs. Prints on sand and lost items being pushed to the shore, where they come from, where they go. I’m drawn to earthy tones and navigating that through yellow has been fun.
