Join us this Saturday to celebrate the launch of ‘Intertidal Allotment: A Work In Progress’ with an in-conversation between artist Andrew Merritt and Thai architect Chatpong Chuenrudeemol (@chatarchitects) as part of ‘Intertidal Exchange’. 📚🌟 Part guidebook, part journal, the publication looks at what’s happened so far in our exploratory journey creating the world’s first ‘Intertidal Allotment’. 🌱 ‘Part One: Seeding’ begins with walking, talking and eating with people on Sheppey to understand its unique ecology and what an Intertidal Allotment might mean to them. It then visualises how Andrew’s design process developed in response to this, and the traditional allotment practice of upcycling found materials. 👐 ‘Part Two: Tending’ sees us testing materials and fabricating prototypes with local friends before working with the necessary council and environmental bodies to install these first prototypes on our chosen site. It shares a timeline of the regular reports we received from our Caretaker James Buttenshaw and marine biologist Ian Tittley, who were closely monitoring the structures to see what species were growing on and inhabiting them. 🍽️ ‘Part Three: Harvesting’ presents recipes for future allotment harvests from @cherrytruluck & @luciathewildkitchen, bringing to life the culinary opportunities that Intertidal Allotment could yield. Announcing: ‘Intertidal Allotment: A Work In Progress’ 📘 What would it be like to cultivate plant life and food growing in the intertidal zone? ‘Intertidal Allotment: A Work in Progress’ delves into the first five years of artist Andrew Merritt’s attempt to answer this question on the Isle of Sheppey. Beautifully designed by @polytechnic___, this publication — part guidebook, part journal — records the first steps in the exploratory journey towards establishing the world’s first ‘Intertidal Allotment’. Documenting the steps taken towards growing the seed of an idea into a functioning prototype on the Sheppey coastline, it considers how, with support, communities can respond to climate change through collective stewardship of land, sea, and food systems. Back in March, artist Andrew Merritt (@somethingandson) and architect Chatpong Chuenrudeemol (@chatarchitects) met in Bangkok for the first part of their 'Intertidal Exchange'. ⁠ ⁠ From the Mae Klong River to the mangroves around Samut Songkhram, Chat introduced Andy to Thailand's unique coastal landscapes and shared how his work responds to these contexts, drawing new connections between their two practices. 🌱⁠ ⁠ If you'd like to hear more about their exchange, join us in Whitstable on Saturday 20 June for a conversation between Andrew and Chatpong. This Wednesday join ‘The Eel’s Tale’ filmmaker Sam Williams (@s_a_m_w) for an introduced screening of ‘The Open Road’ programme at East Gallery Norwich. 🍿 Drawing on the radical structure and spirit of ‘The Canterbury Tales’, Sam Williams’ ‘The Eel’s Tale’ is a multi-species portrait of life in Kent’s wetlands. Tracing the life cycle of the European eel and its elusive presence in Kent’s waterways, the film explores how a creature defined by migration across national borders, shifting environments, and bodily transformation can reshape how we understand our place in the world. Now showing: ‘The Open Road’ at East Gallery, Norwich University of Arts. 🎬 For this week and next, @eastgallery_norwichuni is exhibiting all three films from the ‘The Open Road’ programme — a series of artists’ moving image works reimagining the age-old tale of a journey taken, on foot, by water and through time. It was brilliant seeing so many of you out in the grey and the drizzle for our Creek Walk with Matthew Hatchwell as part of ‘The Eel’s Tale’ programme in Faversham! ☔️ Matthew guided us from Stonebridge Pond out into the marshes to observe the passage of European eels as they arrive in Kent after their 4000 mile journey from the Sargasso Sea, where they’ll remain for the majority of their 15-50 year lives. He regaled us with the many wonders and mysteries of eels, from taxes being paid with eels in medieval England, to featuring in the Magna Carta, to tragically being the most illegally trafficked animal in the world. We heard of their prominence in European art and literature and how their sexuality was a mystery for thousands of years; Aristotle famously believing that they spontaneously generated from mud, while Freud tried and failed to find their reproductive organs. Scientists only recently learned that these develop later in life on their return journey to the Sargasso, however still to this day, their mating process has never been witnessed, highlighting the eel’s enduring enigma. He informed us of the struggles they’re facing in their migratory journey due to climate change and the work needed to make flood barriers permeable for their movement. We eventually landed in @standardquaykent to conclude our adventure with a screening of @s_a_m_w’s film during its final weekend being presented here. Announcing: From the Edge – a Cement Fields Symposium with Three Rivers, Grand Union and Floating U̶n̶i̶v̶e̶r̶s̶i̶t̶y̶ Berlin. Join us for a day exploring community climate action and regenerative artistic practices through three live projects from across the UK. 🗯️ Contested zones on the edges of urban expansion, liminal spaces where nature and industry intertwine, and peripheral sites of infrastructure are increasingly holding unique ecological and social potential in the response to climate change and environmental injustice. These locations, often defined by their contradictions – neither urban nor rural, common nor private, productive nor wastelands – are often being explored by artists, activists, and communities as sites to nurture resistance, care, and learning. Throughout the day, we will look at ‘Intertidal Allotment’ - our long-term project with Andrew Merritt - alongside @threeriversbexley’s ‘Beneath the Pavement, the Marshes’ and @granduniongallery’s ‘The Growing Project’. Round table conversations and panel discussions will bring together artists, curators, and communities at the forefront of reimagining the care of our environment, to collectively consider how we can collaborate as guardians and agents of climate action.
