🌊 Voices of the River: A Day for the Medway - Rochester and Chatham 🌊 Join us in Rochester and Chatham for a day of creativity, action and connection as part of the River Medway Pilgrimage 2026. Together we’ll explore what it means to care for the Medway as a living river. And, for the latter part of the day, we are inviting the youth to lead. Details from Intertidal Allotment: A Work In Progress, a recent publication for Cement Fields. Part guidebook, part journal, the publication looks at what has happened so far in the exploratory journey of creating the world’s first Intertidal Allotment. The book’s sections guide the reader through Andrew’s enormous body of material. Collated since the project’s inception in 2021, his archive consists of folders of research, sketches, models, drawings, photography, charts, transcripts, experiments, maps, archival imagery, reflections and recipes. We assisted through visual prompts in a close edit to organise the content into three distinct parts (Seeding, Tending and Harvesting) developing distinct layouts for each to offer changes in pace and visual contrast. Our design language was informed by the bulletins and surveys distributed across the British Isles from the late 1940s through the 1960s by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. These densely packed resources featured bold, type-only covers on uncoated stock, with layouts to accommodate a range of charts, diagrams and texts. Singer-sewn binding gathers the stiff and fibrous Gmund Matt 55 coversheet in a way which helps present the document as something of a field guide. 240 × 167mm 68pp Softcover with flaps (4-panel, roll-folded) Singer-sewn CMYK Printed in the UK Photography (slides 1, 3 & 6) by @thomasadank Free copies were distributed at the launch event last weekend: an in-conversation between artist Andrew Merritt and Thai architect Chatpong Chuenrudeemol (@chatarchitects). June came and went… I turned 38, Gemma visited for a couple of weeks, and the summer solstice marked a slow return to shorter days. More ancient sites were encountered as well as many artists, their work, and others; all help shape and propel my ongoing preoccupations with home, place, land, water. Containment and porosity. This month was also my first taste of an extended period of programme delivery at Chalkwell Hall: Essex Writers House, in collaboration with @essexbookfest. 30 days of hosting many artists and writers, where we are lucky enough to spend time with them, their thinking and their work. Now, I have a real sense of the incredible team at Metal Southend, Pip, Amber, Emma and Ian do amazing work (and big thanks to Charlie, too!) After spending many years reflecting on the Blackwater estuary and thinking-with others in and around this place, I experienced the culmination of Dr Nastassja Simensky’s PhD research and the extensive body of work that she’s developed over the last 5 years or so — incredibly rich in scope and confident in its execution, ‘Leaky Transmissions’ holds the complexities of the estuary and it surroundings in such a rigorous and generative way, congratulations Nastassja! As my curatorial research and thinking develops (alongside others, as always!), informing future programming for Chalkwell Hall and elsewhere, I am excited to see where things lead.

This week’s Community Project Grant Spotlight goes to……’A Year Long Feast: The Hoo Hedden’ 📚Taking its name from the Saxon name for a storeroom, The Hoo Heddern is a travelling ‘library’ of food, housed in a mobile trailer, and a place dedicated to the seasons of the Hoo Peninsula. Commissioned by Cement Fields, this exciting project will be delivered by Cherry Truluck, who will work with local residents on the Hoo Peninsula to fill the Heddern with stories, recipes, oral histories, seeds, ingredients and fragments of lived knowledge. At the heart of the project is a field of oats, sown on the Peninsula with a group of local young people. 🌾As the Heddern gathers stories, the oats gather light, rain, labour and care. Their slow passage from seed to harvest becomes both material and metaphor - a shared act of tending that anchors the project in the rhythms of soil and climate. The work leans deliberately into the temporalities of growing: waiting, uncertainty, repetition, collective effort, and eventual transformation. The project will hold ‘Kitchen Table Workshops’ and seasonal gatherings where local resident’s, growers and young people will come together to reflect on past, present and future food practices – sharing meals, memories and practical knowledge. 🍽️ Cement Fields tell us "We are delighted to receive support from the Whose Hoo Community Grants. The funding allows Cement Fields and the artist and food systems researcher Cherry Truluck to continue our engaging with a wide range of residents on Hoo, establishing key relationships with farmers and growers and laying the foundation for a community-led stewardship of food, land and place." 🌾 The Hoo Heddern is coming to Grain Coast Crafty Alpaca Farm 🌾 Step inside The Hoo Heddern and explore a travelling collection of stories, recipes, objects, memories, and food traditions gathered from across the Hoo Peninsula. Open drawers, discover handwritten notes, browse recipes, and uncover connections between the salt-pans, gardens, mudflats, and kitchens that shape this unique landscape. 🔎 Each stop along the peninsula adds another thread to the Heddern’s growing tapestry: a recipe rescued from a drawer, the smell of a childhood meal, a seed packet saved from a long‑gone allotment, a note about what once grew in the salt‑touched soil, or a catalogue that once lived in someone’s shed. You’re welcome to share anything connected to food and the Hoo landscape: 🌱 📖 Stories of meals, marshes, gardens, and kitchens – written or just memories to share 👨‍🍳 Favourite recipes — smudged, typed, or half‑remembered 🥕 Ingredients grown, gathered, or simply loved 📚 Books, catalogues, clippings, foraging notes 🐟 Memories of fishing, foraging, cooking, preserving, and feasting Every contribution will become part of a living, travelling portrait of what food means here and how it has shaped the peninsula, past and present. Reciprocal Space was a programme ran by Flimsy Works exploring reciprocity in design. Young people were encouraged to think about how materials impact the landscapes they are extracted, stored on, or grown from. Together, we demonstrated how demountable construction can ensure materials stay in circulation and built self-supporting structures that reduced material use by relying on shorter or thinner sections. We tested all of these principles in the building of a Reciprocal Pavilion at Whitecliffe (formerly a chalk quarry), one of the largest development sites in Ebbsfleet Garden City. Designed to come together and apart in minutes, Flimsy Works guided the young people to prefabricate components for the Reciprocal Pavilion, and facilitated its assembling as part of a showcase event where friends and family were invited to enjoy this pop-up space. Simple techniques and accessible processes that relied minimally on tools were chosen, allowing construction to be as collaborative as possible. All of the materials for the Reciprocal Pavilion are either waste or grown. The timber for the structure is salvaged from the film industry by ReCollective (@_recollective_) the reed for the ‘thatch flags' reclaimed from an exhibition by Material Store (@_materialstore_) at Tipping Point East (@tippingpointeast) Willow and birch coppice from the lakeside itself was supplied by Middlemarch and used to stiffen the benches. Straw grown in Kent and supplied by Glen Charter were bundled or bagged to create cushions for sitting on. Inspired by tipis, six ‘sticks’ come together in the middle as a self-supporting structure, stabilised by a bag woven from waste textiles - such as coffee bags from Hormozi (@hormozi_coffee) in Kent - and filled with demolition rubble as ballast. Reciprocal Space was commissioned by Cement Fields (@cementfields), and the Ebbsfleet Design Group is delivered in partnership with the Ebbsfleet Development Corporation (@ebbsfleetgardencity)
