Matariki marks the Māori New Year, signalled by the rising of the Matariki star cluster (known across the world as the Pleiades) in the midwinter sky. For generations, this special time has been one of remembrance, celebration, and renewal. As the stars return, we honour those who have passed, give thanks for the present, gather with whānau (family) and friends, and look forward with hope to the year ahead. Matariki also reminds us of our deep connection to the whenua (land), the skies, and each other. Tonight we celebrated with fireworks, but Matariki itself is a celebration of reflection, gratitude, storytelling, sharing of food and reconnecting with the values that strengthen us! Anzac Day marks a special day, a day of remembrance and gratitude, as we acknowledge, honour and commemorate all the service members who have died or served in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. As 2025 comes to an end, I want to take a moment to thank all of the amazing people who have encouraged, motivated and supported me this year!
