Happy Disability Pride Month! We are THRILLED to spend time with @ImTiffanyYu, author of the Anti-Abelist Manifesto and founder of @diversability, but more importantly, she’s changing everyone’s lives — those with disabilities and those whose lives are enriched by understanding others (so, all of us). This is probably the most important podcast we’ve done. Tiffany breaks it all down, the issues, solutions and workarounds that unleash our true abilities. You’ll want to get a pen and take notes.

Get the pod here ➡️ https://agirlsguidetocars.com/podcast

This is just the first of our Disability Pride Month podcasts; we have @Livshaka and @accessible_racing_life coming up later and ICYMI this podcast with @torstenfgross (https://open.spotify.com/episode/4MVHTdnBdGCxK3AUgwtVVG?si=nvYGdwNaTAqdaU8VCl1-Tw)

🚨 THE Files Update

Addressing a recent DOJ Memo - watch until the end!

ID: Danielle talks to the camera with a breaking news ticker in the beginning, and some scenes from Willowbrook are shown.
Transcript: A new proposal by the DOJ is calling for offenders in THE files to live in institutions against their will. In their proposed plan to save the country money, they plan to use facilities like the ones pictured. These institutions have a history of staff beatings, rampant hepatitis and inadequate clothing, meals, and facilities, including toilet facilities. These conditions lead to residents dying quicker, but only bad people are affected and they did this to themselves right so who cares? Oh wait, I’m mistaken here. This plan isn’t for people in the files, it’s for disabled people.
These are scenes from Willowbrook - a complex of buildings on Staten Island which housed children and adults with developmental disabilities. RFK senior paid an unannounced visit to Willowbrook. He described the conditions as less comfortable than the cages in which we put animals at the zoo.
If this doesn’t sit right with you, call your legislators today. It’s really easy, most of the time you end up leaving a voicemail.
When I did get in touch with one of mine, it was one of their staffers, I asked if they knew about the issue and they said no. So if you sit back and think this isn’t going to happen, you, I’m not trying to be mean, are naive. So if you care at all about disabled people, please reach out to your legislators today.

The Anti-Ableism Series
Part 380

Featuring @cw_maryzendejas

Disabled people belong at every decision-making table.

Video description/transcript: Tiffany and Councilwoman Zendejas at the Abilities Expo.
Tiffany: "Do you want to be a better ally to disabled people?"
Councilwoman Zendejas: "Absolutely. I'm Councilwoman Mary Zendejas, and I represent downtown Long Beach. We're here today at the Abilities Expo. Know that we are strong, we are talented, and, most importantly, we are very capable."
Tiffany: "You can get elected to office, too."
Councilwoman Zendejas: "I want to see a lot more disabled people running for office because decisions cannot be made without us at the table."

The Anti-Ableism Series
Part 379

Featuring @mollyburkeofficial

For service dogs in public spaces, you can ask:
1. Is that a service dog?
2. What task or service does it provide?
You cannot ask about someone’s disability, and you don’t need to.

Behavior still matters: if a dog is disruptive, it can be asked to leave, even if it is a legitimate service animal.

Both access and safety matter in shared spaces.

Loved getting Molly on The Anti-Ableism Series after being on her podcast! Check out our episode here https://youtu.be/cmU54WdUjnc

The closely timed attacks on the disability community are by design.

Here are some orgs that are working to fight these attacks:
@dcdinc12
@aapdofficial
@dredf1979
@ncilgram

Share any in the comments that I didn’t include!

I know I painted politicians with a broad stroke in this video, so feel free to highlight any that are being productive allies for the disability community. One I will highlight here in MA is Ayanna Pressely @ayannapressley who recently introduced the FAST Repairs for Wheelchairs Act, which is aimed at streamlining the wheelchair repair process for Medicare Advantage beneficiaries. Specific support and legislation like this is what we need!

ID: Danielle rides a mobility scooter outside and talks to the camera. Screenshots of news stories are shown on screen as well as some Bible quotes.
Transcript: There have been so many attacks on the disability community in the last few weeks, and this is by design. It’s during the summer, they want to throw so many attacks that we get overwhelmed and too exhausted to fight back. Obviously the call to action is to talk to your representatives. I have to be honest, it annoys me that we even have to because approximately a quarter of US adults are disabled, so they should be being loud about this already. These are the moments as a disability community and voting block that we should be looking back on when these people are running for office. What did you do during the time when attack after attack has come on the disability community? I also want to say people in power right now are saying that we should be going back to a Christian-based government. I’m a Christian, but I believe in the separation of church and state. However, just for fun, if we consider going back to a Christian-based government, so many of these recent attacks are directly against what Jesus actually said! The sad thing is a lot of people just put their head in the sand, and these are the times we are going to look back on to see who was a true ally and supporter of the disability community.

Tiffany: "Do you want to be a better ally to disabled people?"
Jennifer: "Of course I do. My name is Jennifer Kumiyama. I am a Long Beach girl. I have a disability myself but I also want to help other people with disabilities too. Anyone can become disabled at any time. Helping people who are disabled now doesn't mean that you're not helping yourself either."
Tiffany: "When we join this beautiful disability community, if we focus on accessibility now..."
Jennifer: "We'll benefit later."
Tiffany: "Love it."
Jennifer: "Yeah."

The Anti-Ableism Series
Part 377

Featuring @reprokhanna @rokhannausa

We need to modernize the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program to raise the asset limit from $2,000 (hasn’t been adjusted since 1989) to $10,000 and adjust it for inflation. Learn more about H.R. 2540, the SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act.

Video description/transcript: Rep Ro Khanna and Tiffany in the frame.
Tiffany: “Do you want to be a better ally to disabled people?”
Rep Ro Khanna: “Hi, I’m Ro Khanna. I represent Silicon Valley in Congress.”
Tiffany: “As a congressman, is there anything right now that you’re working on that would better help support the disability community?”
Rep Ro Khanna: “Absolutely. The Supplemental Security Income and the Social Security Disability Income is way too low. It’s about $1,000 a month. You can’t live on that. And so I’m on a bill to try to raise that threshold so it becomes a meaningful wage. And also for people who go to work, and then are unable to work for a while, they lose all their benefits. It should be more flexible so that we can go to work, leave work, and come back to work.”
