What could $500 do for recovery? 🚲

In 2009, I received a $500 microgrant to start @diversability. Today, we’re 80k+ strong, celebrating disability culture and creating economic opportunities for disabled people.

Now The Stanley Fund for Recovery is awarding 2 $500 microgrants to addiction recovery in the Los Angeles area. Nominate a nonprofit in the 📌 pinned post 📌 by tomorrow, July 26.

A while back, I got a notification that I had been nominated for this recognition with @diversability because of my work with mental health this year. Recipients are selected and announced this month, but honestly- just the fact that I was nominated by people (I still don’t know who) for the work I’ve been doing with Hope Through Help is a true surprise and honor. Thank you to whoever nominated me. Here’s to sharing more about mental health and changing lives for the better! #diversability #d30

Did you know the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed on July 26, 1990?

Prior to that the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 only prohibited disability based exclusion in only Federally funded programs and agencies.

The creation of the ADA prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and public and private places open to the general public.

Prior to me getting injured and sick, I was unaware of the ADA. It wasn't until disability affected me personally that I began to research what options and protections I have available. The ADA does not provide paid leave, but VA Disability Compensation, Short Term Disability, Long Term Disability and Social Security Disability Insurance do overlap with the ADA.

The ADA has helped me personally with job protection, leaves of absence, and work accomodations. With mobility aids and medical devices like Reptar becoming my Service Dog and now my Cane. Even with disability license plates for our vehicles and disability placards for when we travel.

There is still so much more work needed to be done to help and protect the disabled community, but knowing some of the History is just the beginning.

A few more moments from last week’s @la_waat gathering. 🚲

One of the most encouraging things about these sessions is when the conversations continue long after the presentation ends.

I also recently met someone working to expand ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) protections for people with substance use disorders, including those who aren’t yet in treatment. It’s a reminder that disability inclusion requires us to think beyond traditional boundaries and ask how our systems can better support people where they are. More to come. 👀

Thank you to @nikistrohm and everyone at LA WAAT for creating space to explore the intersections of ableism, addiction, recovery, and belonging with me and @therapy.with.casey. I’m grateful for the thoughtful questions, the warm welcome, and all of the conversations that are still unfolding. 🧡

Some moments of joy from @disabilityrightsca’s Disability Pride Month Community Gathering 🚲

Disability Pride Month is a reminder that disability justice and recovery are connected. For many people living with substance use disorders, access to civil rights protections, inclusive communities, and supportive systems can make a meaningful difference in the recovery journey.

Loved reconnecting with Vanessa Ramos from @disabilityrightsca. Through her work, she’s helping advance efforts to expand and strengthen ADA protections for people living with substance use disorders. Too often, people in recovery are left out of disability rights conversations, even though federal disability protections can be life-changing for many people navigating substance use, treatment, and recovery.

It was also great meeting @brian.wizzz from @breatherehab and the team behind @bylaforla_official, whose harm reduction work shows what it looks like to meet people with dignity, compassion, and community.

Recovery doesn’t happen in isolation. It happens when we build systems that recognize people’s humanity, protect their rights, and create opportunities for everyone to belong.

Looking forward to continuing to build bridges across the disability, harm reduction, and recovery movements.

This Disability Pride Month, ahead of the 36th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), we’re investing in the organizations that help make recovery possible by awarding $1,000 in unrestricted microgrants to two LA-area addiction recovery nonprofits ($500 each).

How to nominate:

3️⃣ Tell us in one sentence why they deserve this microgrant

🗓️ Nominations close Sunday, July 26 (anniversary of the ADA). Winners announced Friday, July 31.

📌 To qualify, organizations must be a 501(c)(3), fiscally sponsored, or a public charity serving the Los Angeles area.
