North Carolina Museum of Art presents:
“SOAR”: AN INTERPRETATION OF MICHAEL RICHARDS: ARE YOU DOWN? BY FLEE DANCE/FRANKIE LEE

In “Soar” FLEE DANCE choreographer Frankie Lee Ill
shares the stories and experiences of the Tuskegee
Airmen through dance and film. The airmen were
significant points of reference for Michael
Richards’s artwork, especially their individual and
collective triumphs in the face of segregation in the
United States. This tribute celebrates the
perseverance of these courageous men and hopes
to inspire the audience to moments of reflection,
remembrance, unity, and love. The performance is
followed by a talkback with the choreographer.

The Tuskegee Airmen were the first Black military
aviators in the US Army Air Corps (AAC), a precursor
of the US Air Force. Trained at the Tuskegee Army
Air Field in Alabama, they flew more than 15,000
individual sorties in Europe and North Africa during
World War II. Their impressive performance earned
them more than 150 Distinguished Flying Crosses
and helped encourage the eventual integration of the US armed forces.

On June 6, Frankie Lee III shared his beautiful dance solo in response to "Prism 5" and "Prism 7" on display in NCMA's sculpture garden behind the West Building.

Adorned in custom-made wings attached to a mechanical motor, Lee performed for approximately 30 on-lookers amongst the artwork and shallow lilypad pond.

An ambulance with sirens ablaze went rushing by the museum approximately halfway through his dance performance. But this disruption didn't hinder Lee's celebration of freedom and resilience. The sirens served as a reminder that we needn't stop our celebration of life amidst chaos.

Lee showed us that movement is power. Dance is power. Resilience is the key to freedom. And freedom is all around us if we choose to see it.

This short snippet doesn't do the performance justice! Towards the end, Lee removes the wings and dances with them in reverence of how they served him just moments before.

Thank you for sharing your gift of light with us!

Want to see him perform soon? Check out Downtown Cary Park's Juneteenth Celebration on June 20!

From toddlers to teens, high school students to university dancers, seniors to professionals — teaching has allowed me to share movement across generations, communities, and spaces.

Through FLEE Dance, I’ve had the honor of teaching modern, contemporary, contemporary ballet, jazz, hip-hop, African dance, stretch, body conditioning, and artist development to students, pre-professionals, companies, and communities across the United States and internationally.

This reel is more than a teaching highlight. It is a reflection of the range, care, discipline, joy, and purpose I bring into every room. Whether I’m working with young dancers, elders, professionals, or first-time movers, my goal is always to create a space where people feel seen, challenged, supported, and free.

Teaching is one of the ways I get to serve, pour into others, and share what God has placed in me.

Somewhere between Soul Train, Black joy, street dance research, and a late-night funk show host 😆💁🏽‍♂️

This is movement study in real time — learning, practicing, and reworking dances, grooves, style, and performance choices from the eras and communities I’m researching🕺🏽

Excited to bring this research and soul to the stage for Juneteenth.

And before that — come see me next week at the North Carolina Museum of Art for my free performance:

Still Moving: Prism 5 and Prism 7 as Interpreted by Frankie Lee III

June is moving with freedom, humor, memory, and transformation. 🪽✨

This video is me playing with time — mixing “Let It Whip” energy with the Whip/Nae Nae, while pulling from whacking, popping, locking, vogue, disco, funk, and 80s dance research. Dance keeps reminding me that the past is never really past — it lives in the body, remixed.

Catch me this June:

June 6 | 11 AM & 1 PM

Free performance inspired by Prism 5 & 7 — wings, nature, resilience, and transcendence.

June 20 | 4 PM
Downtown Cary Park @downtowncarypark
Freedom Dance — a Juneteenth celebration with local artists and community.

Still here. Still moving. Still becoming. 🖤

Celebrating another year of teaching chair exercise at Abbotswood at Stonehenge — and feeling especially grateful that I now get to teach two classes with this beautiful community.

There was a season of my life when I was disabled, using a wheelchair, and simply wanting to walk, move, dance, laugh, and feel joy in my body again. Now, to be able to offer movement, music, stretching, coordination, and fun to others is deeply full circle.

This class is something I wish I had during my own healing journey — but that experience gave me so much empathy, love, patience, and a deeper understanding of what it means to create safe, joyful movement for every body.

Every time I spend time with the residents at Abbotswood, I leave with more than I came with. I’m learning from incredible people — retired scholars, professors, community leaders, artists, storytellers, and elders with so much wisdom and life experience. I pour into them, and they pour right back into me.

I’m so grateful to spend more time with this community, to move together, laugh together, and celebrate what our bodies can still do.

Here are a few moments from our time together.
