Last Monday it was nice to catch up with the T124A2’s from Barnet Marine Park! There was an unconfirmed report the T123’s were still up in Indian Arm but it was probably a mistake, but later the T124A2 came by as a nice consolation prize. I first saw them last year in May when they were exiting west out of the Lions Gate Bridge. Apparently they had successfully hunted down a seal under the Ironworkers Bridge minutes before they continued east closer to Cates Park as they went into Indian Arm. I was hoping they'd come closer to Barnet as other pods had been doing lately but it was neat to see the backlit spouts! This pod is an offshoot of the T124A matriline, led by Kittiwake’s daughter T124A2 Elkugu (b. 2001) with her son T124A2A Agafia (b. 2013) and daughter T124A2B Litton (b. 2016). Agafia is 13 years old and his dorsal fin should start “sprouting” in the next few years, but it looks sleek and sharp like that of a shark. 7/06/2026, Barnet Marine Park #T124A2 #orca #killerwhale #barnetmarinepark #burnabybc

The most stunning afternoon on the seawall yesterday watching this group of 6 transient orcas exiting the Lions Gate Bridge. They were still mid-channel as they approached the bridge but moments later they surfaced close to shore and continued along for some time. This group consists of two female matriarchs – T124A Kittiwake and T86A Eider, each with a son and a daughter. Kittiwake has been a fairly regular visitor in the past month, with her son Kasuun (T124A6) and daughter Kite (T124A7). Three of her older daughters have dispersed and now have young of their own and have also been seen with other pods in the Inlet and Howe Sound in the past few months. Eider was born in 1988 and made a few visits up the Inlet last spring. She can be identified by a nick near the top of her dorsal fin, and swims with her mouth open due to a jaw injury a few years ago. Her daughter T86A4 Akia was born in 2016, and her son T86A5 Siku was born in 2024, the youngest member in this group! Kittiwake and Eider are named after a type of gull and duck respectively, which ironically are rare around Vancouver and I have yet to see either of those! #orca #killerwhale #stanleypark #lionsgatebridge #vancouverbc

Sabine, not Bonaparte's, not a gull! Last Saturday the T90's were joined by T124A4's were also in town - T124A4 Sabio and her two daughters, T124A4A Strix and T124A1A Sabine. Sabine is a female orca calf born in 2024. Young orcas have limited lung capacity and are seen surfacing more often and ride alongside their mother's slipstream. Her designation T124A1A is interesting as she was initially identified as the calf of Sabio's older sister T124A1 Bonaparte, but when Bonaparte dispersed from her pod, she stayed under the care of Sabio and is now generally considered Sabio's calf. There remains speculation whether this was a misidentification (and she should have been named "T124A4B" if she is Sabio's calf) or if Bonaparte rejected her calf and she was adopted by Sabio. A pair of Marbled Murrelets off the seawall flapping their wings. We counted a total of 12 of them during the Coastal Waterbird Survey, mostly out on the bay and towards Spanish Banks. Apparently there was a grey whale around there and a few gulls and cormorants feeding offshore so there's probably lots of fish around! These tiny alcids (related to murres, guillemots and puffins) nest in old growth trees and spend their winters out in open water. #marbledmurrelet #stanleypark #spanishbanks #stanleyparkseawall

Happy World Orca Day! (Repost as it turns out this was a different mother and calf in the T86A pod) I filmed this back in May at New Brighton Park of an orca with calf surfacing - this appears to be T86A1 Nahanni with her calf T86A1B Denali, born 2023 (gender still to be determined). They were travelling with their extended family with Nahanni's mother/Denali's grandmother T86A Eider as matriarch. Eider also recently had a calf born last year, T86A5 Siku (male) who was travelling with the group as well. Thus this matriline consists of 3 generations! Seen from Canada Place last Friday (4/25/2025), the T101 Orcas! This trio were heading out from Indian Arm in the evening and very quickly headed west out of the Burrard Inlet. This pod is somewhat known for swimming quickly and not seen doing much else! 2 weeks ago I had seen them from Maplewood Flats heading up the Arm but it was too far for any photos and barely visible through the spotting scope. The T101's consists of a matriarch female T101 "Reef" (born after 1969) and her two sons, T101A "Rush" (born 1993) and T101B "Lagoon" (born 1997). The males both have tall sprouted dorsal fins, with Rush having a slightly curvy dorsal than Lagoon. Reef also had 2 more sons who have since passed away, while T100 Hutchins appears to be her daughter who has since formed her own family. It was exciting to see these Harbour Porpoises in the Burrard Inlet on Thursday (April 11). They are fairly common in the Strait of Georgia but this is the first time I've seen such a large group of at least 15 individuals. It seemed like boats were aware of their presence and slowed down but one yacht decided to do a 180 degree turn back to the Lions Gate Bridge. #harbourporpoise #porpoise #cetacean #stanleypark #burrardinlet #vancouverbc

After the Storm It was a windy and stormy until the afternoon and this Storm American x Eurasian Wigeon hybrid was taking a break with other Wigeons before a Marbled Godwit STORMED the scene! The Storm Wigeon is an uncommon variation of American Wigeon where the cheeks are white instead of grey, but this is the first time I've seen it in an American x Eurasian Wigeon hybrid.
