~ Juvenile Pileated Woodpeckers August 2025 Stanley Park, Vancouver B.C., Canada I was walking loops around Lost Lagoon at Stanley Park, trying to find a very elusive Kingfisher that I heard considerably more than I saw, when a group of 3-4 of these guys flew RIGHT past my head. I stopped my kingfisher search and diverted my attention to give these guys some time in front of my lens. A really special thanks to Frank @fylegend21 at @stanleyparkecology for helping me identify these birds. The Nature House was a great little spot to get away from the sun, while also meeting the staff who help tend to the park, and share the same passion for wildlife, nature and photography. #nikonca #woodpeckers #stanleypark #nuts_about_birds #raw_wildlife

It looks like a Little Stint but this is actually the Semipalmated Sandpiper. Proud to spot this one on August 8 2025 over the moss of Lost Lagoon in Vancouver 🇨🇦🍁, especially since it was right after a 15+ hours travel journey. Despite its small size—no bigger than a crow—merlins are bold predators who pursue small birds, insects, and mammals (like bats and voles). ⁠ ⁠ @fylegend21 caught a photo of this merlin swooping in for a snack as two dragonflies were mating... talk about nature's plot twist 😅⁠ ⁠ In the Pacific Northwest, we have the darker “black” merlins who are comfortable residing in our humid climate. Make some room, Mom! This family of Killdeer has been spotted on the mudflat of Beaver Lake recently, with a brood of four chicks. The young will learn to fly by 25 days old! 🐤 Killdeer are named for their shrill "kill-deer" call, and are known to be noisy birds. The fifth batch from the #2024KBAPhotoContest brings together striking wildlife interactions, resilient plant species, remote fjord landscapes, and a shared appreciation of nature in urban coastal spaces 🌼 Flora 🌾 "Humbly Hanging On" by @puffypete features the resilient Baikal Sedge thriving in the dune fields of Yukon’s Carcross Dunes KBA. A Beringian relic from the Ice Age, this sedge faces ongoing threats from invasives, fire suppression, and human activity. Landscapes 🌊 "Around the Corner" by @Captainplantman offers a glimpse of Sydney Inlet on Vancouver Island (Cleland Island & Southeast Clayoquot Sound Candidate KBA). This remote fjord is home to incredible wildlife, from whales to tiny trilliums, and serves as a reminder of why protecting these pristine ecosystems matters. Fauna 🦅 "Bald Eagles on a Log" by Kathy Stewart captures an adult and juvenile Bald Eagle sharing a small perch in the Chehalis Estuary Candidate KBA. A striking image of these majestic birds in their natural habitat. People & Conservation 🦆 "Harlequin Ducks – Nature Appreciation on the Seawall" by @FYLegend21 captures a unique moment in Stanley Park, Vancouver (Fraser River Estuary KBA). As a paddleboarder paused to photograph a pair of Harlequin Ducks, Frank documented the scene, blending nature and recreation within the fragile seascape of English Bay.

Another #FlyingFriday brought to us by the talented @fylegend21⁠ ⁠ “Male Brown-headed Cowbird belting it out!⁠ ⁠ Cowbirds have an intriguing song both in its sound and origin. It is best described as a metallic series of gurgling sounds of alternating frequencies using the right and left syrinx to produce high and low notes respectively.⁠ ⁠ Cowbirds are brood parasites where the young have to ultimately find their identity as a cowbird. One way they do this is through an innate “password” chattering call that hooks them up with other cowbirds. Although bird songs are usually learned, the male’s song also has a basic innate component which is recognized by females.”
